USA Basketball Names 2016 Men's Select Team
Denver Nuggets guards Gary Harris and Emmanuel Mudiay have been chosen to be a part of the 2016 USA Men’s Select Team, USA Basketball announced today.
They are part of a group that includes 15 players with USA Basketball experience and seven that were 2015-16 NBA All-Rookie first and second team selections. Harris and Mudiay are among 25 players who have been chosen to train July 18-21 in Las Vegas, Nevada with the 2016 USA Basketball Men’s National Team in preparation for the Rio Summer Olympics. Members of the Select Team will train daily from 12:00-2:00 p.m. PDT with the USA National Team at UNLV’s Mendenhall Center.
Gary Harris made big leaps in his sophomore year. Harris played in 76 games and averaged a career-high 12.3 points, 2.9 rebounds, 1.9 assists, and 1.3 steals in 32.1 minutes per game. He was just one of seven players this season to average 12+ points, shoot 47% from the field, 35% from three, and 81% from the line this season. In one stretch from Feb. 24 to Mar. 28, he scored double figures in 18 straight games. Harris also scored 10+ points in 54 games this year.
In 68 games, Emmanuel Mudiay averaged 12.8 points, 5.5 assists, and 3.4 rebounds in 30.4 minutes per game. After the All-Star break, he stepped up, averaging 3.5 more points per game (14.9 from 11.4), half a rebound more (3.7 from 3.2), and shot higher percentages from the field (39.3% from 34%) and from three-point range (36.4% from 27.2%). He finished the season ranking first among all rookies in assists, second in minutes and sixth in scoring. For his efforts, he was named to the 2015-16 All-Rookie Second Team and finished seventh in this year’s Rookie of the Year voting.

San Antonio Spurs head coach Gregg Popovich, who was named head coach of the USA Basketball Men’s National Team on Oct. 23, 2015, will oversee the Select Team.
The first USA Select Team was assembled in 2007 and included players like 2015 Finals MVP Andre Iguodala, Al Jefferson, and J.J. Redick. More recently, the 2014 Select Team included Harrison Barnes, Draymond Green, Doug McDermott, Victor Oladipo, Dion Waiters, and Cody Zeller. Since its inception, USA Basketball has used five USA Select teams to help prepare the USA National Team for international competition.
