Alternative Logo and Jersey

DENVER, Nov. 22 -- The Denver Nuggets today unveiled a secondary logo and second road jersey that gives a retro design twist and a salute to the region’s history.

“This is an exciting day for the Nuggets,” said team General Manager Kiki Vandeweghe. “This is a terrific looking jersey and we believe players and fans alike will be proud to wear it.”

“The pick axe logo provides a correlation to Colorado’s gold mining days since that’s where the team got its name,” said Kroenke Sports’ executive director for creative services Kelley Kocher. “It’s a fun design and we think fans will appreciate the reference to the team’s past.”

The Nuggets have been one of six NBA teams without a basketball in the team logo. The pick axe logo features a basketball underneath crossed pick axes. The logo showcases the team’s current blue and gold colors.

The second jersey is one of four team jerseys unveiled by NBA teams today. The dark blue jersey features a retro-style gold script, gold piping and sky blue highlights.

Kocher said work began on the jersey design more than a year and a half ago and that the secondary logo design was done at the same time – all with an eye toward becoming part of a single package. She also said the dark blue color is a nod to the dark color of the Nuggets road jersey worn through most of the 1990s.

“It’s been a fun process,” said Kocher. “It’s been quite a collaboration between the team, the NBA and Reebok.” The initial designs underwent several changes with Reebok producing all jerseys.

Although the team will wear the new jersey primarily on the road, the Nuggets will showcase the jersey at Pepsi Center twice this season, including Friday night’s game against the Los Angeles Clippers.

The new jersey and pick axe logo merchandise will be available exclusively this weekend from Altitude Authentics at Pepsi Center or online at AltitudeAuthentics.com. The merchandise will be available to other retailers on Monday.
