George Karl named West coach of the month for March

DENVER, April 1, 2013 - Denver Nuggets coach George Karl was named Western Conference Coach of the Month for March, the NBA announced today.

Karl led the Nuggets to 12 straight wins to open the month and an overall record of 13-2, which matched the best month in team history (March 1981-82). In the process, Denver also reached 50 wins for the fifth straight full season (38 victories in shortened 2011-12 season).

Among the highlights in March were back-to-back road wins at Chicago and Oklahoma City and home victories over the playoff-bound Thunder, Atlanta Hawks, Los Angeles Clippers, New York Knicks, Memphis Grizzlies and Brooklyn Nets.

With their 101-95 win over Sacramento on March 23, the Nuggets matched their 43-year-old franchise record with 15 straight victories.

This marks the 12th time Karl has been named Coach of the Month in his 25-year NBA career, including his fifth time in Denver (January 2013, February and March 2005 and January 2010).

He remains one of only three coaches in team history to win a Coach of the Month award (Doug Moe and Bernie Bickerstaff), and the first to win more than two with the Nuggets.

With 1,124 career victories, Karl has the sixth-most wins in NBA history. His 416 wins in Denver ranks second only to Moe’s 432.
