Las Vegas Summer League: Payton Pritchard scores 23 points to lead Celtics over Hawks

The second-year guard out of Oregon led all scorers with 23 points in Boston's victory.

The Boston Celtics defeated the Atlanta Hawks 85-83 in day one of the MGM Resorts Summer League at Cox Pavilion on Sunday.

It took 10 ties and 13 lead changes to determine a winner, with neither team ever leading by more than 10 points. The Celtics made the final run that mattered, ending the game on an 8-2 spree across the final 42 seconds to erase a four-point deficit. Boston ended up shooting 16-for-51 from three-point range while holding Atlanta to just 6-for-22.

Second-year guard Payton Pritchard led the Celtics with 23 points, five rebounds, five assists and two steals. Pritchard hit a three-pointer with 42 seconds left to pull the Celtics within one. He made two free throws with under five seconds remaining to officially ice the win for Boston.

Former Purdue standout Carsen Edwards amassed 17 points, eight rebounds and six assists. Romeo Langford, who hit the go-ahead three-pointer with 12 seconds to play, finished with 12 points, six rebounds and four assists.

Jalen Johnson, a 2021 first-round pick out of Duke, led the Hawks with 20 points, 10 rebounds and two assists. Sharife Cooper totaled 11 points, two rebounds and six assists. DeVaughn Akoon-Purcell provided 13 points, eight rebounds and two steals, while Max Heidegger led the bench with 12 points and three assists.

Both teams return to action on Tuesday, with Atlanta playing the Indiana Pacers and Boston facing the Denver Nuggets.
