Pelicans rookie Nickeil Alexander-Walker commits to 'A Thousand Miles'

If any journey of ‘A Thousand Miles’ indeed begins with a single step, New Orleans Pelicans rookie Nickeil Alexander-Walker appears ready for the rest of them.

At Saturday’s Open Practice in the Smoothie King Center, the No. 17 overall pick stepped out to center court for a good-natured rookie moment, and fully embraced his mission: covering Vanessa Carlton’s Grammy-nominated debut single.

The 2002 song, which peaked at No. 5 on that year’s Billboard Hot 100, unexpectedly earned a meme-worthy revival within NBA circles during the summer of 2016, when Team USA broke into a mid-flight sing-along that notably included Draymond Green, DeMar DeRozan, Jimmy Butler and a blanket-enfolded Kevin Durant. Carmelo Anthony was memorably nonplussed.
