With over 5,000 players in NBA history, at least one player was born on every day of the calendar year – including three leap day ballers. Our day-by-day breakdown of the players born on each day of the year continues.
Below are the most notable NBA players born on Sept 27.
Steve Kerr (Sept. 27, 1965): A five-time NBA champion as a player, a four-time NBA champion as a coach and the NBA’s all-time leader in 3-point percentage (45.4%), Kerr has left an indelible mark on the game in a career that has spanned over three decades. Kerr was selected by Phoenix with the 50th pick in the 1988 NBA Draft after setting the NCAA record (that still stands) for the highest 3-point percentage in a season (57.3%, min. 100 3-pointers made) during his senior season at Arizona.
Kerr played in Phoenix, Cleveland and Orlando before arriving in Chicago, where he spent five seasons and won three championships alongside Michael Jordan, Scottie Pippen and Dennis Rodman. While 1998 was the last dance for Chicago, Kerr kept the championship streak going, winning titles in 1999 and 2003 with the San Antonio Spurs.
After his 15-year playing career came to an end, Kerr stayed connected to the game as a broadcaster and a front-office executive with the Suns before becoming the head coach of the Golden State Warriors in 2014. Led by Stephen Curry, Klay Thompson and Draymond Green, the Warriors won the NBA title in Kerr’s first season. It was the first of five straight NBA Finals appearances (2015-2019) that saw Golden State win three titles (2015, 2017, 2018). The Warriors returned to the Finals in 2022 and won the fourth title of the era and the franchise’s seventh overall – third-most in NBA history. As part of the NBA’s 75th anniversary celebration, Kerr was named one of the top 15 coaches in NBA history in 2021.
After playing for Gregg Popovich in four of his final five NBA seasons, Kerr succeeded Popovich as head coach of the USA Men’s National Team, leading the Americans to the gold medal at the 2024 Olympics in Paris, before beginning his 11th season as head coach of the Warriors in 2024-25.
