Jaylen Nowell scored a game-high 24 points and the Minnesota Timberwolves held off the San Antonio Spurs’ second-half rally to notch a 91-89 win in the MGM Resorts Summer League at Cox Pavilion on Monday night.

The Timberwolves had turned a two-point first-quarter lead into an 11-point advantage by halftime. However, San Antonio clawed its way back by narrowing the deficit to just three points entering the final period. After tying the game one final time with 44 seconds left, the Spurs couldn’t defend what proved to be game-winning putback by Nathan Knight with 15.1 seconds left.

Devin Vassell led the Spurs with 23 points, adding four rebounds, one assist and two steals. Tre Jones followed with 16 points, eight assists, three rebounds, one steal and one block. Jaylen Morris furnished 12 points, three boards, one assist and one steal. DaQuan Jeffries supplied 11 points and three rebounds. Rookie first-round pick Joshua Primo tallied eight points, two rebounds, two assists and two steals.

The Timberwolves’ Nowell complemented his 24-point tally with six rebounds and four assists. Knight finished with 19 points, nine rebounds, two assists, one steal and one block. Jaden McDaniels registered 18 points, six rebounds and four assists.

The Spurs return to action Tuesday against the Bulls at Cox Pavilion, while the Timberwolves battle the Bulls on Thursday afternoon at Thomas & Mack Center.
