ORLANDO – El Orlando Magic son los primeros en responder a la llamada del presidente de UCF, John C. Hitt, para donaciones filantrópicas para ayudar a asegurar un nuevo campus en el centro de la ciudad.

El Magic ha comprometido $1.5 millones hacia un nuevo edificio académico que será la pieza central de un nuevo campus el cual servirá a unos 7,700 estudiantes universitarios de UCF y Valencia.

"Un centro de la ciudad, vibrante, dinámico y fuerte es fundamental para el crecimiento continuo de nuestra comunidad", dijo el CEO del Orlando Magic Alex Martins, un miembro del fideicomiso de UCF y ex alumno. "El campus de UCF en el centro de la ciudad será un catalizador para ese desarrollo continuo, ya traerá a varios miles de estudiantes al área de “downtown Orlando”, mientras que servirá como un centro para la creación de empleo. "La familia DeVos y el Orlando Magic están orgullosos de ser socios fundadores de este proyecto, el cual tendrá un enorme impacto económico y servirá como otro estímulo en la diversificación de las oportunidades disponibles en nuestra ciudad."

UCF y el Magic celebrarán el regalo privado inicial en apoyo a “UCF Downtown” con una presentación de un cheque durante el juego entre el Magic y los Rockets de Houston a las 7 pm el miércoles, 23 de diciembre, en el Amway Center. Martins presentará un cheque a Mike Morsberger, el vicepresidente de UCF para relaciones con ex alumnos y el desarrollo, al final del primer parcial.

El regalo del Magic llega a menos de dos semanas después que el presidente Hitt hizo un llamado a la comunidad para ayudar a UCF a recaudar $20 millones en donaciones privadas para financiar un tercio del nuevo edificio. La universidad también está contribuyendo $20 millones de sus recursos y está pidiendo el estado $20 millones adicionales.

UCF compartirá el plantel con el Valencia College, el cual ofrecerá programas en los medios digitales, la tecnología de información de salud y culinaria y hospitalidad, incluyendo capacitación laboral y otros certificados para aumentar el acceso a la educación en el centro inmediato de la ciudad.

"La familia DeVos y el Orlando Magic han liderado el camino en la transformación del centro de Orlando," dijo el presidente de Valencia College Sandy Shugart. "Con esta generosa donación esperamos que UCF y Valencia puedan unirse a ellos de manera más rápida en esta visión increíble."

Los comisionados del condado de Orange votaron por unanimidad el mes pasado para contribuir $3 millones para el proyecto. La Junta de Síndicos de Valencia College anunció planes para contribuir $2 millones para la construcción del nuevo edificio académico que la universidad compartirá con UCF.

La familia DeVos y el Magic generosamente han apoyado al DeVos Sport Business Management Program de UCF, un programa de postgrado para estudiantes el cual se enfoca en la ética, diversidad, liderazgo y servicio comunitario. ORLANDO – The Orlando Magic are the first to answer UCF President John C. Hitt’s call for philanthropic gifts to help secure a new downtown campus.

The Magic have pledged $1.5 million toward a new academic building that will be the centerpiece of a new campus serving about 7,700 UCF and Valencia College students.

“A strong, vibrant, dynamic downtown is paramount to the continued growth of our community,” said Orlando Magic CEO Alex Martins, a UCF trustee and alumnus. “UCF’s downtown campus will be a catalyst for that continued development, bringing several thousand students downtown, while serving as a center for job creation. “The DeVos family and Orlando Magic are proud to be founding partners in this project, which will have a tremendous economic impact and serve as another stimulus diversifying opportunities available in our city.”

UCF and the Magic will celebrate the initial private gift supporting UCF Downtown with a check presentation during the Magic-Houston Rockets game at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 23, at Amway Center. Martins will present an oversized check to Mike Morsberger, UCF’s vice president for alumni relations and development, at the end of the first quarter.

“The DeVos family and Orlando Magic are longtime, generous supporters of our university, particularly the DeVos Sport Business Management Program and our first-generation students,” UCF President John C. Hitt said. “We are thankful that the Magic share our vision that a robust, innovative UCF Downtown campus will recast the future of Orlando and add significantly to the educational opportunities for our students.”

Pending approvals, the campus will open in fall 2018. UCF Downtown will offer students an innovative learning environment within walking distance of a wide array of internship and job opportunities in fields such as digital media, communication, public service and health-related programs. The new academic building will complement a renovated Center for Emerging Media building where UCF’s nationally ranked graduate video gaming school, the Florida Interactive Entertainment Academy, is located.

The Magic’s gift comes less than two weeks after President Hitt called on the community to help UCF raise $20 million from private donations to fund one-third of the new building. The university is also contributing $20 million from its resources and asking the state for an additional $20 million.

"To bring the UCF Downtown campus vision to reality we will once again use our community's unique formula for partnerships that has resulted in projects like SunRail and the community venues," said Orlando Mayor Buddy Dyer. "We are grateful to the DeVos family and Orlando Magic for being the first private sector partners to make a commitment to help us advance this catalytic project which will benefit our City and our entire region."

UCF will share the campus with Valencia College, which will offer programs in digital media, health information technology and culinary and hospitality, including workforce training and other certificates to increase access to education in the immediate downtown area.

"The DeVos family and Orlando Magic have led the way in the transformation of downtown Orlando,” said Valencia College President Sandy Shugart. “With this generous gift we hope UCF and Valencia can join them sooner in this amazing vision."

The Magic’s gift, the first private donation, joins other commitments from public partners.

Orange County commissioners voted unanimously last month to contribute $3 million toward the project. Valencia College’s Board of Trustees announced plans to contribute $2 million toward the construction of the new academic building that the college would share with UCF.

Additionally, the value of in-kind contributions of land and infrastructure by the City of Orlando and the developers of Creative Village is approximately $75 million.

The DeVos family and the Magic have generously supported UCF’s DeVos Sport Business Management Program, a graduate program for students that focuses on ethics, diversity, leadership and community service. SportBusiness International ranks the program No. 2 among all graduate sport business programs in the world. An endowment gift by the DeVos family provides scholarships and graduate assistant positions for students.

The Orlando Magic Youth Foundation also has provided scholarships for UCF first-generation students – students who are the first in their families to attend college.

Magic Contribute $1.5 Million for UCF Downtown Campus

ORLANDO –  When he was named co-winner of the Rich and Helen DeVos Community Enrichment Award last March and was granted $50,000 to donate to charities of his choice, Victor Oladipo quickly identified a subject he wanted to assist with. It was an area close to Oladipo’s heart and one he’s come to learn a lot about over the years.

On Tuesday, Dec. 15, Oladipo surprised the UCF Listening Center with $35,000 to help serve families and children who have a hearing loss.

Oladipo’s sister, Kendra, became deaf when she was in the second grade. And while it was challenging for the entire family, Oladipo saw how perseverance, determination, faith and resilience could conquer the most difficult of obstacles.

“It taught me about how to face adversity,” Oladipo said. “Kendra is a huge reason why I am here right now. She believed in herself. It’s an inspiration. She’s an amazing human being.”

“When you have a bad game or a rough week, she texts me and it changes my whole demeanor, it changes my whole mindset,” he added. “It’s definitely helpful to have her in my corner.”

Like her brother who was an under-the-radar basketball prodigy at DeMatha Catholic High School in Maryland before starring at Indiana University and becoming a No. 2 overall NBA Draft pick, Kendra, 25, has overcome many challenges. She’s currently a substitute teacher at the Model Secondary School for the Deaf in Washington D.C. and will soon be attending graduate school in California.

In addition to the check presentation, Oladipo got a tour of the UCF Listening Center and learned about the programs and technologies they have to offer. Joined by his sister and mother, Joan, Oladipo was thrilled to see how the funds he has given will help so many people of all ages improve their ability to communicate.

The $35,000 donation will be used to provide a variety of services at the center and provide a one-week summer camp for children with hearing loss.

“I’m grateful and touched by this presentation,” Associate Professor at UCF’s College of Health and Public Affairs Linda Rosa-Lugo said. “The earlier a child with hearing loss is identified, amplified and receives appropriate services, the more opportunities the children will have to succeed. This gift will really allow us to serve children and families and prepare our students.”

Oladipo still has $15,000 left to donate to another charity from the Community Enrichment Award grant. While he hasn’t yet decided which organization to assist next, Oladipo is ecstatic knowing he will soon be helping more people live healthier lives.

“I feel like it is our duty to be able to give back to people less fortunate than us,” Oladipo said. “I’m just going to continue to keep doing that.”

Tobias Harris was the other co-winner of the award. He recently made his donation to Nap Ford Community School and the Orlando Community & Youth Trust to assist in intellectual and social tools to improve education and mentoring initiatives for Parramore-area youth.

Each year, the Orlando Magic honor a player or players who have dedicated their efforts off the court for the purpose of enhancing others’ lives. The award is handed out each year at the Orlando Magic Youth Foundation Black Tie & Tennies Gala.
