Ranking NBA's Top 10 Point Guards in 2019-20
#9 Ja Morant
No. 2 overall draft picks, especially in years when the No. 1 pick turned out to be elite, have generally not fared too well throughout the years in the NBA. Sam Bowie was the No. 2 pick in 1984, the year Hakeem Olajuwon was chosen first. After the Cavs snagged LeBron James in 2003, the Pistons opted for Darko Milicic. Emeka Okafor heard his named called second in 2004 after Dwight Howard was selected by the Magic. Michael Beasley came after Derrick Rose in 2008, Hasheem Thabeet after Blake Griffin the next year and two years later Derrick Williams was picked right after Kyrie Irving. Those are just a few examples. It doesn’t appear, however, that will be the case when we reflect on the 2019 draft years from now, as Morant, the second pick behind Zion Williamson, has had an absolutely sensational rookie campaign with averages of 17.6 points and 6.9 assists.
