Ranking 10 Greatest European Players in NBA History
#3 Pau Gasol
Unlike most of his foreign counterparts in the late 1990s and early 2000s, Gasol was on many NBA general managers’ radars prior to coming over from Spain. He was so highly touted that he became the first prospect from overseas (no college or American high school experience) to be chosen in the top three of the NBA Draft (very next year Yao Ming was selected first overall). Gasol got off to a terrific start in Memphis, where he was the Rookie of the Year in 2002 and averaged at least 17 points in each of his six-plus seasons with the Grizzlies. But, it wasn’t until he was traded to the Lakers in 2008 that he’d become a difference-maker on a championship team. A six-time NBA All-Star who continues to make an impact wherever he is playing, Gasol helped L.A. capture back-to-back titles (09, 10).
