Catching Up With...J.J. Redick

June 11, 2007

Orlando Magic guard J.J. Redick has been working out at the RDV Sportsplex for about a month now, keeping in shape during the off-season, while also preparing to play for the Magic in the summer league.

After playing a game of horse against NASCAR driver Jeff Burton on Monday, Redick met with the media. Here's what J.J. had to say:

What do you think about finally having a new coach?
"It's a good feeling that we have a new coach and it's a done deal. Everybody can now focus on what we have to do to improve our organization and improve our team.

Have you talked to Coach Van Gundy?
"I talked to Coach Van Gundy on Friday night. He called me at my house. He's going to be in town tomorrow and I'm looking forward to sitting down with him and discussing different things. He seems like a guy that wants to communicate with his players and wants their input and I think that will be good for our team."

How awkward was last week?
"It's been awkward for the last month. When the whole evaluation process started at the beginning of May and then Coach (Brian) Hill being fired. Then not knowing who our coach was, thinking it was (Billy) Donovan and then realizing that it wasn't true. I'm just glad we got our guy and that this whole situation is over with. I think public relations wise it didn't help, but these things happen. People change their mind and you can't fault the guy for going where his heart is. I'm just glad we have Coach Van Gundy and from everything I've heard he's a great guy and a good coach."

Do you think you'll have more of an opportunity to play in Coach Van Gundy's offense?
"I think that's what the NBA is all about is opportunity. You're going to be on a team sometimes with 2-3 guys at your position. It comes down to who gets the opportunity to play and then making the most of that opportunity. What Coach Van Gundy told me and what he said in the media is that wants offense and wants shooting out on the floor. All I told him is that I just want an opportunity. If I do well and I earn a spot, then I earn a spot. But I just want a fair shake, and I think I'm going to get that."

What are your plans for the rest of the summer?
"I'm still unclear on the Vegas thing. I got the schedule in the mail the other day, but I'm just not sure that I'm going to go out there. Right now my focus is just getting better for summer league. Maybe I'll take a little time off after that and then get right back into it. I basically set aside eight weeks here in Orlando prior to summer league for me to train, then a week and a half for summer league. So that's nine and a half weeks of summer that I'm going full tilt."

How are you feeling?
"I'm 100 percent healthy. I feel great."
