thumbnail-image: NBA Comparisons The most obvious NBA player comp for Barnes is Golden State Warriors forward Draymond Green, one of the best playmakers and defenders from the forward position in NBA history. Kyle Anderson, who made great strides in Memphis this past season, is another player he is similar to. There are also some shades of Philadelphia 76ers All-Star Ben Simmons in his game, especially in transition. Two former players he draws comparisons to are Lamar Odom and Tayshaun Prince.
thumbnail-image: Strength #1 Not often does a player 6-foot-9 with a 7’2 wingspan possess the type of vision and passing instincts that Barnes has. Capable of being a primary floor general or serving as a secondary or tertiary playmaker, the West Palm Beach, Florida native averaged 4.1 assists in his one season at Florida State, fifth most in the ACC in 2020-21.
thumbnail-image: Strength #2 Is Barnes the most versatile defender in this draft? He certainly might be considering he is capable of guarding all five positions. He has supreme strength and meets opponents with plenty of resistance on the interior, while his lateral quickness, anticipation and length causes havoc on the perimeter. His defensive rating in 2020-21 was 98.3, ranked 12th in the ACC, and he averaged 1.5 steals, seventh best in the conference.
thumbnail-image: Strength #3 Barnes makes up for a lack of explosion and burst with long strides and high energy. He made 56.1 percent of his two-point shot attempts, many of which came within five feet of the hoop. The former Montverde Academy star takes advantage of every transition opportunity he gets, typically racing ahead of the field for breakaway dunks or initiating fast breaks.
thumbnail-image: Weaknesses Barnes doesn’t possess much in his offensive repertoire. Not only does he rarely beat a defender off the dribble, he doesn’t have the dribbling combinations or crafty movements to shake them. Generally playing in a sixth man role at Florida State, the 19-year-old was a poor 3-point shooter in college, making just 11 of his 40 tries from downtown (27.5 percent). His free throw shooting also wasn’t great (62.1 percent). He coughed the ball up a fair amount with the Seminoles as well, averaging 2.5 turnovers per game.
