thumbnail-image: NBA Comparisons Kuminga, a 6-foot-7, 210-pounder, is similar to several of the league’s long, tough, agile and versatile forwards. The two he gets compared to the most are Pascal Siakam and Jaylen Brown. There are bits and pieces of OG Anunoby, Andrew Wiggins, Al-Farouq Aminu, Jeff Green and Jerami Grant in his game as well.
thumbnail-image: Strength #1 Attacking the basket is what Kuminga does best on the offensive end. Nearly half of his shot attempts with the G League Ignite were taken from inside of five feet of the hoop, where he made 57.3 percent of his tries. In isolation, the 18-year-old is a bit of a contortionist in that he uses his body more than his dribbling combinations to outwork his defenders. His footwork is far more advanced than his ball handling. On his drives, he will often use a spin move followed by an up and under to elude defenders and get a clean shot off.
thumbnail-image: Strength #2 The main reason Kuminga is high on most people’s mock draft boards is because of his two-way potential. He has an NBA-ready body and a 7-foot wingspan, both of which help him on defense. He already can guard positions one through four and there’s a chance he can defend fives in small-ball situations. He moves really well laterally, making him an excellent on-ball defender, and he has terrific timing when he slides over from the weak side to block or alter shots.
thumbnail-image: Strength #3 Kuminga doesn’t need the ball in his hands to be effective and make a non-box-score impact. He excels in transition and does a solid job slashing and cutting to the basket. His long strides and quickness helps him evade defenders, particularly when he dashes down the baseline from the corners. Also a very good rebounder, the native of the Democratic Republic of the Congo creates second-chance scoring opportunities for his team just by being aggressive and using his supreme athleticism. Unafraid of some contact, he draws fouls through his persistence and toughness.
thumbnail-image: Weaknesses Kuminga is not a natural scorer. With the G League Ignite, he shot only 38.7 percent from the floor and 24.6 percent from 3-point range. Although versatile, he can be wild and erratic. There’s nothing really smooth about his game. He’ll dribble around in circles sometimes, leading to careless turnovers and unwarranted shot attempts. While he should be an elite defender, as noted in one of the previous slides, navigating around screens and closing out on shooters were not really strengths of his in the G League.
