thumbnail-image: NBA Comparisons The player Sengun, who is 6-foot-9, 243 pounds, compares the most to is Indiana Pacers All-Star Domantas Sabonis, both in skill and basketball IQ. Another All-Star he is similar to is Nikola Vucevic, although Sengun doesn’t yet have the range that Vucevic has. A former NBA player Sengun resembles is Luis Scola, one of the craftiest big men the game has ever seen.
thumbnail-image: Strength #1 It’s quite amazing just how polished he is for 18 years old (turns 19 right before the draft). His craftiness, footwork, timing, creativity, hands, coordination, balance and body control are advanced. His bread and butter is taking his defender into the low post, sealing him off and using an array of moves to score. He has a soft touch with both hands, can spin in either direction and has countermoves to trick his opponents. His up-and-under is his signature move on the low block.
thumbnail-image: Strength #2 What Sengun proved in the Turkish league is that he’s much more than just a plodding, back-to-the-basket big man. His spatial awareness, dexterity and fluidity make him an excellent roll-man in pick-and-roll. Underrated about his game is his agility. While not the fastest or most explosive player, he makes quick decisions after setting a ball screen or slipping inside. He also catches just about everything thrown in his direction.
thumbnail-image: Strength #3 Not insinuating he has Nikola Jokic-type vision or playmaking abilities, but Sengun, who averaged 2.5 assists in 29 games with Besiktas this past season, makes good reads in the half court. Either from the post or when facing the basket from the elbow or perimeter, the Giresun, Turkey native always has his eyes up and he’s quick to react to what the defense is showing. Also an excellent rebounder, he will attack the glass to create second-chance scoring opportunities for his team.
thumbnail-image: Weaknesses The No. 1 concern on Sengun is his lateral quickness, or lack thereof. Defending in space is something he struggled with in Turkey. Not yet is he a stretch big. He only made four 3-pointers last season, but considering he’s a good free throw shooter and mid-range shooter, there’s no reason to believe he can’t extend his range. He’s only listed at 6’9, so perhaps he’s a bit undersized if he’s strictly going to play at the five spot.
