These three pieces represent my life in California. The first explores the state’s transformation over time, reflecting both its beauty and its struggles. The second captures my internal battle with fear and self-doubt, which often held me back from pursuing my dreams. The third symbolizes my determination to stay optimistic and focused, even when surrounded by negativity from others who couldn’t understand the vision I held for my future. The backboard, I aimed to evoke the essence of childhood—a time when things weren’t always perfect. By distressing the wood, I shifted the focus from the illustrations to the raw, emotional texture of the piece, capturing a sense of nostalgia and imperfection. This approach prioritizes the feeling over the visuals, allowing the backboard to tell its own story.
What and who has inspired and enabled you to become an artist?
At 15, a hit on my life shook my world. Instead of responding with violence, I found solace in art. I picked up a pencil and began teaching myself to draw Disney characters. Drawing became my refuge, allowing me to escape the turmoil around me. This creative outlet not only helped me heal but also sparked a lifelong passion. From that moment, art became my sanctuary, guiding me through adversity and shaping my path as an artist.
Describe your art practice and how your journey in the art world has evolved over time?
At 15, I began my journey as a self-taught artist with just a piece of paper and a pencil. Over the years, I honed my drawing skills, turning blank canvases into intricate works of art. My passion for creativity never waned, and at 32, I discovered the captivating world of pyrography. With determination and self-discipline, I taught myself this new medium, transforming ordinary pieces of wood into stunning, burned art.
How do you connect to Southern California and what do you love about living in the Los Angeles region?
I've lived in Los Angeles for 47 years, born and raised here. I started in South Central as a little boy and moved to different cities, but always stayed in LA County. This place is home, with its mix of cultures and endless activities. From bustling streets to quiet beaches, LA has everything. I love the culture, the people, and the energy. This city has shaped me, and I can’t imagine living anywhere else.
How would being recognized by the Lakers In the Paint program help your art career in a distinct way?
Being recognized by the Lakers in the Paint program would be a game-changer for my pyrography career. It would validate my hard work and open doors to new opportunities. The exposure from such a prestigious program would connect me with a broader audience, allowing my art to reach more people. It would also boost my credibility and inspire me to keep pushing my creative boundaries. This recognition could transform my passion into a thriving career, bringing my art to the next level.
