Congratulations to the Friendship Circle on winning the March 2015 Lakers Youth Foundation YOU Grant!
Thank you for all of those who voted. Check back in January 2015 for the last YOU Grant of the 2014-2015 season!
Mission: The Friendship Circle’s purpose is to bring joy and companionship to children with special needs in a way that celebrates, rather than laments, their uniqueness and individuality. The underlying philosophy of the Friendship Circle is that every child is an entire world – worthy of the gifts of love, laughter, nurturing and connection regardless of what I s seen on the surface, at the core, children with special needs are not so different after all.
Funding Project: Miracle Sports League, a sports program that encourages children to participate in weekly sports games that challenge, yet accommodate, the individual needs of each child and helps them build skills, foster self-esteem, teamwork, responsibility and new friendships. The Miracle League is staffed by an experienced coach and our teenage volunteers are on hand to assist in all aspects of preparing for, and playing the games. Our goal is to expand the program every year to include a variety of sports.

Congratulations to Together We Rise for winning the January 2015 Lakers Youth Foundation YOU Grant!
Thank you for all of those who voted. Check back in March 2015 for the next YOU Grant of the season!
Together We Rise
Mission: Together We Rise is a non-profit organization dedicated to transforming the way youth navigate through the foster care system in America.
Funding Project: Foster children have, on average, three different foster care placements: At the moment, almost all children in foster care only receive two trash bags to move their personal possessions when they are picked up by social services. Frequent moves in and out of the homes of strangers are profoundly unsettling for children. The Sweet Cases project aims to provide duffel bags and/or suitcases to foster youth when they first enter the system in order to provide them with a sustainable item to transport their belongings from home to home. In providing foster children with duffel bags filled with various necessities (including hygiene products) and other items (such as stuffed animals), we hope to change the perception the kids acquire when placing their belongings in a trash bag. In addition, it allows foster children to build self-esteem and have something to call their own.

Summer 2014 YOU Grant Basketball Court Refurbishment Contest
Congratulations Boys and Girls Club of Los Angeles Harbor for winning the Summer 2014 Lakers Youth Foundation YOU Grant Court Refurbishment!
Boys and Girls Club of Los Angeles Harbor
Mission: To enable all young people, especially those who need us most, to reach their full potential as productive, caring and responsible citizens. We achieve this through a commitment to quality programs and services in an environment that is safe, nurturing and inspiring.
Funding Project: In 2001, the Port of Los Angeles Boys & Girls Club opened its doors in one of the most impoverished communities in the Harbor Area – The Rancho San Pedro Housing Projects. The Site engages over 250 youth a day and is open Monday – Friday from 12pm – 6pm. Because of the site’s location next to the public housing units, the club's target demographic is the families that live with-in walking distance of the club. According to LAUSD school data, 93.4% of all youth in the facility qualify for the Free or Reduced Meals program. The Boys & Girls Club provides more than just a safe place, for many children it is their 2nd home.
The new Gym floor will enhance the program by providing a safe and professional play area for the youth who attend the facility . For many of the children, this will be the only time they have access to a large gymnasium for physical activity. In its current state, the gym floor is loose and the striping is in poor condition. We want the Boys & Girls Club to be an oasis in the desert. The new Gym floor will provide this oasis and help the kids to reach their full potential.

Congratulations Tia Family Service Center for winning the January 2014 Lakers Youth Foundation YOU Grant!
Tia Family Service Center
Mission: The TIA Family Service Center, based on the concept of the “TIA” (or aunt) as a cultural dynamic within the Latino family, is committed to promoting healthy family functioning, lending care and reassurance to families in need by providing Therapy, Intervention and Advocacy. Our goal is to be that “TIA” (or aunt) to at risk families in order to provide them with an additional source of support when there is a family need or crisis.
Funding Project: The TIA Family Service Center's Family Harmony workshop is focused on helping at risk families by providing tools that can help create a more nurturing and less conflict filled home environment. These tools will help families improve methods of communication and stress management, therefore resolving disagreements in ways that breed family unity. Effective communication along with cultural sensitivity can help build self-esteem and allow family members to feel empowered and in harmony. Healthy families are less likely to struggle with family discord, thus producing well-adjusted and successful children. The goal of this ongoing workshop is to help create healthy families which in turn will make a healthier community.
