Chick Hearn Book Drive
The Los Angeles Lakers encourage all Lakers fans to celebrate Chick Hearn Night on Sunday, November 21st by bringing a new children’s book to STAR Plaza of STAPLES Center before the Lakers game versus the Golden State Warriors. All books will be donated to local literacy organizations in memory of Hall of Fame broadcaster, Chick Hearn. All fans who donate a new children’s book will receive an official 2010-2011 Lakers pin and be remembered for their generosity. The names of book donors will be written on donation-recognition stickers and affixed to the inside cover of the donated book, so that every child who opens that book will see the name of the thoughtful Lakers fan!
Chick Hearn Night has been celebrated at the Lakers home game closest to Chick’s birthday, every season since his passing in 2002. The book drive is a perfect way to celebrate Chick’s passion for reading and education, and the Lakers dedication to literacy. Since the creation of the NBA’s league-wide Read to Achieve program in 2001, the Lakers have contributed significant funding, time and resources to promoting literacy, inspiring children to develop a life-long love of reading and encouraging adults to read aloud to children. In addition to book drives, the Lakers conduct an annual “Be a Champion… and READ!” Reading Challenge for elementary school students, arrange Reading Time Outs where members of the Lakers All-Star Reading Team read aloud to children, and have created fifteen Lakers Reading Learning and Centers at youth centers throughout Los Angeles and Hawaii.
***If there is rain Sunday evening please proceed inside the STAR Plaza entrance and look for the donation booth on the left hand side.***
