#NYK70 | 1994: Beastie Boys: "I Got My Hair Cut Correct Like Anthony Mason"
The late, lamented Anthony Mason really came into his own during the Knicks’ successful run under Pat Riley in the early 1990s. The big fella, who would win the NBA’s Sixth Man of the Year award in 1995, became a fan favorite for his intimidating style of play alongside Patrick Ewing.
“Mase” was also beloved for his trendsetting haircuts. Courtesy of barber Freddy Avila at Cutty’s Hair Studio in Jamaica, Queens, at various times Mason had his own name, his team’s name, the phrase “In God’s Hands” and likenesses of the Statue of Liberty and the Manhattan skyline all shaved into his head. His unique style made lifelong fans of another group of diehard New Yorkers, the Beastie Boys, who paid tribute to Mase’s hair design on their classic album “Ill Communication.”
