Today, the NBA announced that Sacramento Kings Assistant Coach Bryan Gates was selected to join the Jr. NBA Leadership Council scheduled to meet in Charlotte during NBA All-Star Weekend 2019.

“The Jr. NBA program makes basketball accessible to our youth, teaching them the fundamentals and core values of the game and I am honored to join the Leadership Council," said Coach Gates. “I look forward to collaborating with my fellow council members to develop innovative, inclusive and forward-moving programs and initiatives that expand the NBA’s platform.”

The Jr. NBA Leadership Council was established in 2015 to support the league’s global youth basketball program for boys and girls. This program teaches the fundamental skills as well as the core values of the game to help grow and improve the youth basketball experience for players, coaches and parents. The Leadership Council is responsible for providing direction on the program’s development and evolution, including Jr. NBA programs and initiatives like “Her Time to Play” and the “Jr. NBA Global Championship.”

Coach Gates will join a group of prominent basketball stakeholders and influencers currently on the Jr. NBA Leadership Council, including Dallas Mavericks Head Coach Rick Carlisle, three-time NBA Champion Steph Curry of the Golden State Warriors, 2015 WNBA MVP Elena Delle Donne of the Washington Mystics, WNBA Legend Tamika Catchings, ESPN analyst Doris Burke and Toronto Raptors President Masai Ujiri, among others. General Martin E. Dempsey serves as the chairman of the council.;

This season marks Bryan’s tenth season in the NBA, his third in Sacramento after being an assistant coach for the Minnesota Timberwolves and the New Orleans Pelicans. Prior to his time in the NBA, Gates had a successful three-year stint as the head coach for NBA D-League’s Idaho Stampede. With the Stampede, he was a two-time recipient of the Dennis Johnson Development League Coach of the Year (2006-07, 2007-08).

Sacramento, Calif. – This summer, the Sacramento Kings youth basketball program – Junior Kings – will feature Kings Legends as guest coaches at the region’s premier youth clinics. Seven clinics, starting with a special May 13 Mother’s Day clinic featuring Monarchs Legend Ruthie Bolton, will provide children ages 6-14 a unique opportunity to learn fundamental basketball skills, teamwork, and self-esteem from many fan-favorites, as well as the best local coaches and trainers.

Upcoming clinics will feature Doug Christie, Kings General Manager Vlade Divac, Bobby Jackson, Brad Miller, Peja Stojakovic, and Chris Webber.

“Junior Kings clinics certainly teach some of the basic skills that keep kids active and healthy, promote teamwork, and create friendships - but they are also designed to allow kids to have a whole lot of fun,” said Kings Vice President of Community Impact Scott Moak. “And to have these Kings Legends back in Sacramento, involved with Jr. Kings this summer is such a treat for the kids, their families and the community."

Through Junior Kings leagues, camps, clinics and special events, the Sacramento Kings continue to invest in the region by promoting health and wellness with area kids in a positive and safe environment. Special events like the upcoming Mother’s and Father’s Day clinics provide parents, family members and friends to share in the fun and join the young athletes to build their basketball skills together.

Summer Youth Basketball Clinics to Feature  Legendary Kings as Expert Coaches

Sacramento, Calif. – Local youth basketball coach, Dwight Taylor of Albert Einstein Middle School in Sacramento, has been selected as a semi-finalist for the Jr. NBA’s 2016-17 Jr. Coach of the Year Award. NBA teams around the country nominate local coaches who do more than instruct players on the court and focus on teaching life lessons to develop young people into healthy, confident and respectful adults.

Coach Dwight Taylor has coached Einstein Middle School boys’ basketball in Sacramento for two seasons. Coach Taylor’s integrity, passion and commitment have been recognized following each season by his peers selecting him to coach a regional All-Star team. In addition to his coaching career, he is also the author of a book called “Domin8 Your Day,” a high-energy, high-value, interactive book that takes readers through insightful explorations of how self-awareness can positively impact your life and the lives of others. He has crafted his own YouTube channel which features a variety of different motivational videos.

“Coach Taylor’s passion to create a positive impact in the lives of the athletes at Albert Einstein Middle School is nothing short of remarkable,” said Executive Director of the Kings Foundation Scott Moak. “We’re honored to highlight Dwight’s efforts and urge our community to stand behind a coach that tries every day to make #SacramentoProud.”

An executive panel of judges and online fan voting through Twitter will determine the three finalists for the Jr. NBA Coach of the year award. Beginning at 12 p.m. EST on Monday, May 8, fans will be able to cast a ballot for Coach Taylor by using the hashtag #JRNBACOYSAC in a tweet. Voting ends at 11:59 p.m. EST on Monday, May 22. The Jr. NBA will announce the top three finalists on Monday, June 5.

The top three finalists will each be awarded with a financial grant to support their local youth basketball organizations, as well as additional benefits, including a free Positive Coaching Alliance training, basketball equipment and apparel. The finalists will also receive an all-expense paid trip to New York where the Coach of the Year winner will be announced and honored on a national stage at the first-ever NBA Awards Show on June 26, 2017.
