Kings Foundation Announces Recipients for Second Annual Pete Saco Awards

Kings to Recognize One Local Team, Coach and Student-Athlete

Sacramento, Calif. – Today, the Sacramento Kings and Kings Foundation announced the recipients for the second annual Pete Saco Awards. The awards named in recognition of recently retired California Interscholastic Federation Sac-Joaquin Section Commissioner Pete Saco will honor local teams, coaches and student-athletes for their undeniable sportsmanship and service.

“The Kings are proud to recognize the three deserving recipients of these awards,” said Kings President Chris Granger. “Sports have the power to connect people from across different regions and inspire them to create positive change in their communities.”

The 2015-16 Pete Saco Award recipients are:

Pete Saco Scholarship Award—Kelsey Wong

McClatchy High School is a regional powerhouse rooted not just in athletics and competition but also in academic standing. Kelsey Wong is a champion in both areas, on the court as a point guard and team captain, and in the classroom as she exemplifies the achieving student-athlete, balancing her studies with family, friends and sports. She is a scholar enrolled in multiple Advanced-Placement courses, a campus leader and a role model among her peers, leading by example and serving as a volunteer at elementary schools.

Lifetime Achievement Award—Ron Pucci

For 35 years, Ron Pucci served as an influential coach, leader and mentor for the Colfax Falcons boy’s basketball team. Pucci achieved this by utilizing old-school principles of effort, accountability, sportsmanship and appreciation of the game. He was fond of saying, "It's not about the final destination, it’s about the journey of getting there."

Community Impact Award—Sacramento Charter High School Boy’s Basketball Team

Top ranked by The Sacramento Bee for the last six weeks of the 2015-16 season, the Dragons were champions before winning a league and Sac-Joaquin Section championship. They were community champions for their community service as they participated in a number of activities at Valley Children's Hospital in Clovis, near Fresno, sharing their time with children in the Intensive Care Unit and those enduring physical therapy.

The Kings Foundation will honor the winners on March 27, as the Kings take on the Dallas Mavericks.
