Sacramento Kings Foundation Accepting Nominations for Third Annual Pete Saco Awards

Local Team, Coach and Student-Athlete Nominations Accepted Until March 30, 2017

Sacramento, Calif. — Today, the Sacramento Kings and the Kings Foundation announced the nomination period for the third annual Pete Saco Awards is now open. The trio of annual awards named in recognition of Pete Saco, retired Commissioner for the California Interscholastic Federation (CIF) Sac-Joaquin Section, will honor local sports teams, coaches, and student-athletes for their undeniable sportsmanship and service. Award winners will be announced and acknowledged during halftime as the Kings take on the Houston Rockets on April 9, 2017.

"The Kings are excited to again recognize student-athletes, coaches, and local sports teams in honor of Pete Saco, for the first time at Golden 1 Center," said Kings President Chris Granger. "We're proud to continue honoring his incredible efforts, and all that he has done to positively impact and promote the lives of student-athletes throughout the years."

Online nominations for the 2016-17 Pete Saco Awards are accepted at through March 30, 2017, for the following awards:

  • Pete Saco "Community Impact Award" - Team that upheld Saco’s core beliefs regarding sportsmanship, accountability and passion, as well as excelled both on and off the field.
  • Pete Saco "Lifetime Achievement Award" - Coach or administrator who left a positive, inspiring and impactful mark on high school sports.
  • Pete Saco "Scholarship Award" - Student-athlete will receive a $1,985 scholarship for upholding the tenets of Saco’s efforts: athletic performance, community service, and academic success.

Under Pete Saco's leadership, the CIF Sac-Joaquin Section grew from 115 schools to 195 schools and more than 225,000 students. This unprecedented growth also included the expansion of three divisions to seven divisions. Additionally, Saco's legacy entails numerous scholarships and honorable programs, including the Hall of Fame, the Dick Nelson Community Service Award and the Women in Sports Conference.

For over 25 years, the Kings have partnered with Pete Saco to host hundreds of teams and schools at Sleep Train Arena. This year, Golden 1 Center will play host to student-athletes, their families and the educators that support them at the 2017 CIF State basketball championships.
