Sacramento Kings Foundation Accepting Nominations for First Pete Saco Awards
Sacramento, Calif. – Today, the Sacramento Kings and the Sacramento Kings Foundation announced open nominations for the first Pete Saco Awards to honor local teams, coaches and student-athletes for their sportsmanship and service. The trio of annual awards are named in recognition of Pete Saco, who recently retired as Commissioner for the California Interscholastic Federation (CIF) Sac-Joaquin Section.
For more than 25 years, the Kings have partnered with Pete Saco to host hundreds of CIF Sac-Joaquin student-athletes, teams, and schools at Sleep Train Arena. The events provided a platform for student-athletes to gain experience in a professional sports venue.
“Pete Saco has dedicated his life to enhancing youth and high school sports in our region,” said Kings President Chris Granger. “These awards will recognize deserving local teams, coaches and student-athletes who share his commitment and sportsmanship. They will also serve as a testament to Saco’s lasting impact on the Sacramento region.”
The Kings Foundation is now accepting online submissions and nominations for the 2014-15 Pete Saco Awards at Kings.com/PeteSaco through March 17 for the following awards:
- Pete Saco “Community Impact Award” – Team that upheld Saco’s core beliefs regarding sportsmanship, accountability and passion, as well as excelled both on and off the field.
- Pete Saco “Lifetime Achievement Award” – Coach or administrator who left a positive, inspiring and impactful mark on high school sports.
- Pete Saco “Scholarship Award” – Student-athlete will receive a $2,500 scholarship for upholding the tenets of Saco’s efforts: athletic performance, community service and academic success.
The Kings will announce the winners and honor the nominees during the Philadelphia 76ers game March 24, 2015. The community can purchase discounted tickets with no surcharge fees using the special rate code SACO online here, or by calling (916) 928-6954.
Under Pete Saco’s leadership, the CIF Sac-Joaquin Section grew from 115 schools to 195 schools and more than 225,000 students. This unprecedented growth also included the expansion of three divisions to seven divisions. Additionally, Saco’s legacy entails numerous scholarships and honorable programs, including the Hall of Fame, the Dick Nelson Community Service Award and the Women in Sports Conference.
