Preview: Kings (16-27) at Pistons (21-24)

A heartbreaking defeat in Chicago marked the Kings fifth consecutive loss and their eighth in nine games. Now, past the halfway mark of the season with five games remaining on the road, Sacramento is in must-win territory, falling from eighth to 11th in the Western Conference in under a month.

DeMarcus Cousins was in a groove on the tail end of a back-to-back set, scoring 42 points and grabbing 14 boards in the 102-99 loss to the Bulls. Facing star center Andre Drummond, Cousins will hope to replicate his last performance versus Detroit where he flirted with a triple-double en route to a massive comeback win.

Detroit, meanwhile, is in the midst of a three-game winning streak and have been led by the impressive play of Marcus Morris. He has scored 20-plus points in two of the last three contests, including a game-winning tip-in on Saturday versus Washington.

Known for their stifling defense (ranked fifth in opponent scoring per game), it’s been Detroit’s offensive performance of late that has been the difference. They’ve scored above their season average of 100.5 points per outing in each of their recent wins.

To earn a sweep versus the Pistons, Sacramento must improve their three-point defense and limit assist opportunities against their opposition.

Key Matchup

Anthony Tolliver, who played for the Pistons last year, is anticipated to face off against Morris, who’s playing some of his best basketball of the season. Tolliver tied his season-high in scoring and was instrumental in the team’s double-digit comeback victory over the Pistons two weeks ago.

Did You Know?

The Kings last win in the Motor City came during the 2009-10 season. Kevin Martin outdueled Tayshaun Prince and the Pistons with 26 points and led Sacramento to a 103-97 victory.
