Result
The Hornets closed the 2017-18 season on a winning note on Tuesday in Indiana with a 119-93 win over the Pacers, sending legendary broadcaster Steve Martin into retirement on a winning note after 30 years calling Charlotte basketball. Frank Kaminsky led a total team effort with 24 points, as six different Hornets finished with 14+ points.

Turning Point
The Hornets wanted to get off to a hot start on the road to come away with a victory in their final regular season and got just that. Despite trailing 13-10 to start the contest, Charlotte quickly regrouped on the back of a 21-4 run to take a 31-17 lead and finished the first quarter on a Frank Kaminsky half-court three-pointer that gave the Hornets a 37-25 lead. Marvin Williams sparked the Hornets big first quarter with 12 points on four three-pointers while Dwight Howard followed with seven points and six rebounds in the frame.

Hornets Player of the Game
We gave radio broadcaster Steve Martin our Player of the Game recognition in his last home game on Sunday and feel it is only right to send Martin out with back-to-back POG nods. Martin has broadcasted for 30 years with the Charlotte franchise and ends a career spanning 50 years total as both a television and radio broadcaster. In his career, Martin has travelled 1,342,316 miles covering basketball, called 2,404 regular season games and 76 playoff games, called the names of 259 Hornets/Bobcats players (including two years in New Orleans) and 12 coaches during games, called games on 107 radio stations and 43 television stations,  seen five franchises added to the NBA (25 in 1988 and 30 now in 2018) and called games in four countries and 36 states/provinces. Credit FOX Sports Southeast as well for simulcasting Martin on both radio and the television broadcast for the game’s final moments so we all could listen to Steve one last time.

Pacers Player of the Game
Lance Stephenson continues to fill the stat sheet for the Pacers. Two days after nearly recording a triple-double (10 rebounds, 10 assists, eight points) against the Hornets in Charlotte, Stephenson scored nine points, grabbed a team-high 13 rebounds, handed out four assists, swiped two steals and blocked a shot in 33 minutes.

Game Notes
Dwight Howard recorded his franchise-best 53rd double-double of the season, finishing with 14 points and a game-high 17 rebounds. He has now passed Shaquille O’Neal for 14th place on the NBA’s all-time rebounding leaderboard. Howard also blocked one shot… Marvin Williams scored 15 points, grabbed four rebounds, dished out three dimes and blocked two shots, tying him with Al Jefferson for 10th place on the franchise’s all-time blocks leaderboard with 204. Williams also tied a career high with five three-pointers… Kemba Walker scored 15 points on 6-of-11 shooting, including 3-of-6 from long range. He now has 9,907 career points heading into 2018-19… Malik Monk scored 17 points off the bench and drained three treys. Monk finishes the season having hit 3+ three-pointers in six-straight contests.

Charlotte Sends Martin Off On Winning Note in Indiana

After 30 years broadcasting Charlotte basketball, broadcast legend Steve Martin was on the call for his last home game on Sunday as the Hornets fell to Indiana, 123-117, on Steve Martin Day at Spectrum Center. Malik Monk led the way for Charlotte with 22 points off the bench and nearly helped the Hornets erase a 20-point deficit before falling to the Pacers. Charlotte will close their 2017-18 NBA campaign on Tuesday in Indiana as Martin calls his final game.

Turning Point
In a classy move by both the Hornets organization and Fox Sports Southeast, radio broadcaster Steve Martin swapped spots with TV announcer Eric Collins to start the third quarter in Martin’s final home game calling Charlotte basketball. Trailing 72-57 less than one minute into the third, the Hornets instantly responded with Martin on the mic, putting together a 13-0 run to pull within 72-70. Unfortunately for the Hornets, as quickly as they had got back into this one, they were out of it again as the Pacers countered Charlotte’s run with a 21-7 roll of their own in a six-minute stretch late in the third to put them up 93-77. Turnovers doomed the Hornets in that span as seven Charlotte miscues led to 10 Pacers points and the double-digit lead. Indiana opened its advantage to 20 points - 105-85 - early in the fourth before a reserve lineup consisting of Marcus Paige, Julyan Stone, Malik Monk, Frank Kaminsky and Willy Hernangomez fought back to trim the Pacers lead to 118-114 with just over a minute remaining but could not complete the comeback.

Hornets Player of the Game
On Steve Martin Day, the Hornets honored a Charlotte legend who has broadcasted for 30 years with the Charlotte franchise and will end a career spanning 50 years when he calls his final game on Tuesday in Indiana. Domantas Sabots came off the bench to score a career-high 30 points on 13-of-21 shooting from the field and 4-of-4 shooting from the charity stripe while also bringing down eight rebounds, handing out three assists and nabbing three steals in 38 minutes.

Game Notes
Hornets rookie Malik Monk finished with a team-hight 22 points on 8-of-17 shooting, including 3-of-11 from three-point range. Monk has scored 20+ points in his last three outings, becoming the first Charlotte rookie to have three-straight 20+ point games since Walter Hermann had four straight in 2007 (3/30-4/4). Monk also handed out five assists, swiped two steal and only turned the ball over once for the second-consecutive game… With 10 points and 12 rebounds, Dwight Howard had his franchise-best 52nd double-double of the season… Marvin Williams finished with 16 points on 5-of-8 shooting, including 4-of-6 from deep and 2-of-2 from the free-throw line. This is Williams’ third-consecutive game with at least 15 points (4/3 – 4/8). This is the second time this season he has had three-straight such games (1/12 – 1/15)… Willy Hernangomez (14), Kemba Walker (12), Jeremy Lamb (12) and Michael Kidd-Gilchrist (11) also scored in double digits for the Hornets.

Hornets Honor Martin in Last Home Game, Can’t Catch Pacers

A franchise-record first-quarter road total set the tone early for the Charlotte Hornets as they cruised to a dominating 137-100 win over the Magic on Friday, April 6 in Orlando. Rookie Malik Monk had the best game of his young career, finishing with a personal-high 26 points to lead seven Charlotte players in double figures as the visitors knocked off the Magic for the 11th-straight time.

Turning Point
The Hornets sunk 15-of-23 field-goal attempts (65.2 percent) and 9-of-10 free throws to take a 43-25 lead over the Magic after the opening 12 minutes. Charlotte got nine points apiece from Kemba Walker, Dwight Howard and Marvin Williams in the frame and also finished with the highest-scoring first quarter on the road in franchise history as well. Orlando was never able to get back into things and snapped a two-game winning streak with the loss.

 It was another impressive outing for Malik Monk as he racked up a career-high 26 points on 8-of-14 shooting, a career-high-tying eight assists and just one turnover in the victory. Monk is now the first rookie to tally four-or-more three-pointers in three-consecutive games off the bench in NBA history.

Magic Player of the Game
D.J. Augustin finished with a team-high 19 points on 8-of-13 shooting and two assists over 18 minutes in the loss. The former Texas Longhorn has now tallied 15-or-more points in four of his last seven appearances for Orlando.

Game Notes
Frank Kaminsky recorded 21 points and four rebounds in 26 minutes off the bench… Dwight Howard (16 points and a game-high 17 rebounds) and Willy Hernangomez (11 points and 12 rebounds) each finished with a double-double… Howard also had a game-high four blocks… Marvin Williams (18 points), Jeremy Lamb (16 points) and Kemba Walker (13 points) also were in double figures for Charlotte…. Nic Batum chipped in nine points, six rebounds and six assists… The Hornets shot 17-of-31 from three-point range (54.8 percent), while Orlando went 9-of-23 from distance (39.1 percent)… Charlotte also had a season-high 32 assists on just nine giveaways…  The 11-game winning streak for the Hornets against the Magic is tied for their longest against any single opponent in franchise history (April 16, 1993- Nov. 7, 1995 vs. Detroit).

Hornets Continue Their Mastery of the Magic

A late rally wasn’t enough for the Charlotte Hornets to overcome some major turnover issues throughout the night as they fell to the Bulls, 120-114, on Monday, April 3 in Chicago. Dwight Howard finished with 23 points and 17 rebounds for his single-season franchise-record 50th double-double, but the team’s 20 total giveaways were undoubtedly the deciding factor in a fourth-consecutive loss.

Turning Point
Following a pair of Dwight Howard free throws that cut Chicago’s lead to 115-114 with two minutes left in the game, both teams went scoreless for the next 64 seconds before Sean Kilpatrick buried a 26-foot three-pointer to put the Bulls up by four. The Hornets couldn’t get anything to fall in their next two possessions and Jerian Grant iced the game with a pair of charity-stripe shots in the closing seconds to seal Chicago’s third-straight win.

Malik Monk erupted for 21 points (16 in the fourth quarter) on 8-of-15 shooting (5-of-10 from three-point range), two rebounds and two assists in the loss. This is Monk’s third game of the year with at least five three-point field goals, which is now the highest single-season total by a rookie in franchise history (Augustin - 2; 2008-09)

Bulls Player of the Game
Sean Kilpatrick racked up a season-high 21 points (19 in the fourth quarter), three assists and a game-high-tying two blocks in 29 minutes off the bench in the victory. Kilpatrick, who has been on four different NBA teams this season, last scored 20 points on March 8, 2017 against the Atlanta Hawks.

Game Notes
Dwight Howard tallied 23 points and a game-high 17 rebounds for his franchise-record 50th double-double of the season. Larry Johnson held the previous mark of 49 set in the 1992-93 campaign…. Marvin Williams had 18 points, eight rebounds, four assists and his 200th career block for the Hornets… Nicolas Batum chipped in 11 points, four rebounds and a team-high five assists… Willy Hernangomez (11 points) and Michael Kidd-Gilchrist (10 points) also scored in double figures for Charlotte… The 20 turnovers for the Hornets are their third-highest total in a game this year and most since Dec. 1 at Miami (season-high 22)… The Bulls crushed the Hornets in points off turnovers, 28-6… Chicago shot 15-of-34 from long distance (44.1 percent), while Charlotte made 13-of-34 three-point attempts (38.2 percent).

Hornets Can’t Pull Out Win in Windy City

Michael Kidd-Gilchrist and Malik Monk scored 16 points apiece and Willy Hernangomez (15 points, 11 rebounds) and Dwight Howard (10 points, 10 rebounds) each recorded double-doubles but it wasn’t enough to stop Philadelphia in a 119-102 loss to the 76ers on Easter Sunday at Spectrum Center. Philadelphia extended its winning streak to 10 games with the victory.

Turning Point
Trailing 70-62 with 8:30 remaining in the third quarter, the Hornets were looking for some kind of spark and got it when Michael Kidd-Gilchrist blew by Ben Simmons on the left side and threw down a dunk that sparked a 9-2 Charlotte run and cut the lead to 72-71. Unfortunately for the Hornets, they just could not get over the hump and take the lead back from Philadelphia as the Sixers responded with a 14-0 run of their own to break the game open. In that 3:52 stretch, Charlotte missed all five of its field goal attempts and both of its free throw attempts while also turning the ball over three times. In the same stretch, Philadelphia would go on to connect on 7-of-9 field goal attempts to give the Sixers the double-digit advantage and set the Hornets up to play catch up the rest of the way.

Michael Kidd-Gilchrist led the Hornets with 16 points on 6-of-13 shooting from the field and 4-of-5 from the free-throw line. Kidd-Gilchrist has now recorded 10+ points in the three-straight games (3/28 – 4/1). MKG also grabbed five rebounds and swiped two steals in 33 minutes.

76ers Player of the Game
Marco Belinelli came off the bench to lead all scorers with 22 points on 9-of-10 shooting from the field, including 3-of-4 from long range, and 1-of-1 from the charity stripe. He also added three assists and a rebound in 31 minutes of action.

Game Notes
Malik Monk had 16 points on 6-of-9 shooting from the field, including 4-of-9 from beyond the arc. This is the rookie’s 11th game this season with at least three made three-point field goals, tying Raymond Felton for the second highest total of such games by a rookie in Charlotte history (D.J. Augustin: 14, 2008-09)… Willy Hernangomez had 15 points on 2-of-3 shooting from the field and 11-of-14 shooting from the free-throw line. His 11 made free throws and 14 attempts were both good for new career highs (prev: 7-8 at DEN, 12/17/16). He also recorded his third double-double of the season and second with the Hornets… Dwight Howard finished with 10 points and 10 rebounds, good for his 49th double-double of the season, tying Larry Johnson for the most in a single season in franchise history. This is Howard’s 715th career double-double, enough to pass John Stockton and move alone into sixth place on the NBA’s leaderboard since 1963-64… Jeremy Lamb had 12 points on 5-of-13 shooting, including 2-of-4 from three-point range. Lamb has made a career-high 90 three-pointers this season (prev: 88, 13-14 with OKC)… Frank Kaminsky had 10 points on 3-of-8 shooting, including 1-of-5 from deep. Kaminsky has 281 career threes in Charlotte, passing Baron Davis and moving into 10th place on the Hornets all-time three-point leaderboard… Kemba Walker finished with 10 points, four assists and a blocked shot. He made five free throws on five attempts, extending his franchise-best made free throw streak to 53 straight dating back to 3/10 at Phoenix.

Hornets Unable to Halt 76ers Streak

Dwight Howard recorded his 48th double-double (22 points, 13 rebounds) of the season and Malik Monk came off the bench to lead Charlotte’s reserves with 17 points but the Hornets could not match the Wizards three-point barrage or make up for their 17 turnovers leading to 21 opposing points in a 107-93 loss on Saturday in Washington.

Turning Point
Charlotte took a 51-50 lead into the locker room break and was looking to build their lead to open the third but went cold from the field, missing its first six shots of the the quarter. The Wizards countered with an Otto Porter jumpshot and three-straight Bradley Beal three-pointers as they rattled off an 11-0 run to take a 61-51 lead the Hornets would not be able to bounce back from.

Malik Monk continues to progress in his added minutes with the season winding down and finished with 17 points off the bench in 24 minutes to lead both teams’ reserves. Monk connected on 7-of-17 shots from the field, including 3-of-9 from beyond the arc. He also added three assists and a rebound. Monk has averaged 11.5 points in his last four games and hit three treys in three of the last four contests.

Wizards Player of the Game
Otto Porter scored a game-high 26 points on 10-of-15 shooting from the field, including 6-of-10 from long range and added 11 rebounds to complete the double-double on his bobblehead day in Washington. Porter also handed out two assists, blocked two shots and grabbed one steal in 38 minutes.

Game Notes
Dwight Howard finished with 22 points, 13 rebounds, one steal and one block to record his 48th double-double of the season. He passed Emeka Okafor for second-most double-doubles in a season and is just one double-double behind Larry Johnson for tying the franchise high in one season. Howard has also moved into 15th place on the NBA’s all-time rebounding leaderboard… Marvin Williams and Michael Kidd-Gilchrist also scored in double figures in Charlotte’s starting lineup, while Willy Hernangomez (11 points, nine rebounds) nearly recorded a double-double off the bench… Both teams shot 45.5 percent from the field, but the Wizards outshot the Hornets 46.2 percent (18-of-39) to 26.1 percent (6-of-23) from three-point range… Charlotte turned the ball over 17 times leading to 21 Washington points, while the Wizards coughed it up 12 times leading to 12 Charlotte points.

Hornets Can’t Slow Wizards 3-Point Barrage in Washington

The Charlotte Hornets have a new all-time scoring leader. His name is Kemba Walker. It’s a name that may be written in the Charlotte history books for quite some time. Walker finished with a team-high 21 points and broke Dell Curry’s 26-year-old franchise record with 18.9 seconds remaining in the contest when he drove past London Perrantes down the left side and was able to convert the reverse layup with his right hand over Ante Zizic. Walker now sits at 9,841 points and counting as he begins his chase for 10,000. Unfortunately for the Hornets, Cleveland put an end to Charlotte’s four-game winning streak with a 118-105 victory at Spectrum Center.

Turning Point
The Hornets kept things close for the majority of the first half and were tied, 49-49, with 4:19 remaining in the second quarter following Michael Kidd-Gilchrist’s jumper. But things began to unravel for Charlotte at the 4:00 mark as they would not connect on a field goal the rest of the half  (0-of-6) and did not force a turnover on the defensive end. The Hornets did hit 5-of-6 free throws in the stretch, but it wasn’t enough as the Cavs caught fire. Cleveland hit on 5-of-8 shots from the field, including 3-of-5 from long range as they outscored Charlotte, 15-5, led by eight points from LeBron James, and built a 64-54 halftime lead. The Hornets continued to fight back in the second half but could only get the game to a single-digit deficit with 4:43 remaining in the final frame, and only for one possession as the Cavs pulled away late.

It’s a no-brainer that we go with Kemba Walker here. He scored a team-high 21 points and set a new franchise scoring record with 9,841 career points, passing Dell Curry (9,839). Walker went 7-of-18 from the field and 5-of-5 from the free-throw line. His first free throw was his 44th consecutive made free throw, a new franchise record for such a streak (prev: 43 straight, done multiple times). His streak now stands at 48 straight free-throws. Walker brought his career total to 1,999 with the same shot, setting a new franchise record for made free throws (previous: Gerald Wallace, 1,998). He now has 2,003 in his career and becomes the first Charlotte player to reach 2,000.

Cavaliers Player of the Game
LeBron James led Cleveland with a game-high 41 points on 14-of-26 shooting from the field, including 4-of-8 from outside the arc, and knocked down 9-of-11 free throws. He added 10 rebounds to complete the double-double while dishing out eight assists and swiping one steal.

Game Notes
Dwight Howard finished with 19 points, 10 rebounds and one block to record his 47th double-double of the season. Howard now has 2,038 career blocks, moving him past Kevin Garnett (2,037) and into 17th place on the NBA’s all-time blocks leaderboard… Jeremy Lamb scored 11 points on 4-of-6 shooting, including 1-of-3 from beyond the arc. Lamb has 88 made three-point field goals this season, tying his career high of threes made in a single season (88 in 2013-14 with OKC)… The Hornets bench outscored the Cavaliers reserves, 42-35, led by 16 points from Frank Kaminsky on an efficient 7-of-9 shooting from the field… Michael Kidd-Gilchrist (11 points) also finished scoring in double digits for the Hornets… Charlotte led Cleveland in second chance points,  15-14, and points in the paint, 48-44.

Kemba Becomes Hornets All-Time Leading Scorer

Just when you think there’s nothing else Kemba Walker can do for the Hornets, he finds another way to amaze us. Walker scored a team-high 31 points, including 11 points in overtime, and contributed to every basket from the field in the extra session by adding three assists as Charlotte picked up its fourth-straight victory, 137-128 in OT, on Monday over New York at Spectrum Center. With the 31 points, Walker is now just 20 points away from the Hornets all-time scoring record.

Turning Point
While Kemba Walker’s heroics in overtime led the Hornets to the win, it was his performance in the last minute of regulation that enabled Charlotte to get to the extra session in the first place. After Tim Hardaway Jr.’s three-pointer with 40.6 seconds remaining gave the Knicks a 117-114 lead, the Hornets needed someone to step up and Walker seemed like the unlikeliest of candidates after going 0-of-8 from long range in the first 47 minutes of play. But what’s happened in the past has never mattered to Walker, who is always focused on the next play, not the last. So with 21.5 seconds remaining and a hand in his face, Walker continued to show how clutch he can be as he knocked down his ninth three-point attempt and tied the score, 117-117. But he wasn’t done. Just as he’d done two nights before, stepping up with clutch defensive plays in Dallas, Walker was there on the defensive end. With the clock winding down, Walker was able to poke the ball away from Trey Burke at the top of the arc, and although Burke was able to regroup he had to throw up a desperation three as the clock expired and missed, sending the game to overtime. It was there that Walker dominated, hitting all four of his shots in OT, including three treys, on the way to the win.

Kemba Walker finished with 31 points on 11-of-21 shooting, including 4-of-12 from long range and 5-of-5 from the free-throw line, giving him his 14th game of 30+ points this season. Not only did Walker hit the game-tying three to send the game into overtime, but he dominated the extra session, connecting on all four of his shot attempts, including three treys, and handed out three assists to have a hand in every made Hornets field goal in the extra session. Walker has now made 43 consecutive free throws with no misses, tying the franchise record for longest such streak (Walker, D.J. Augustin, Dell Curry). Walker’s five made free-throws bring his career total to 1,998, tied for most career free-throws made in franchise history (Gerald Wallace: 1,998).

Knicks Player of the Game
Trey Burke scored a career-best and game-high 42 points on 19-of-31 shooting, including 3-of-9 from beyond the arc. Burke completed the double-double with a game-high 12 assists while also grabbing one rebound and swiping one steal.

The Hornets 20 overtime points tied the franchise record (prev: at GSW 1/28/11)… With 23 points and 13 rebounds, Dwight Howard logged his 46th double-double of the season. Howard is tied with Larry Johnson (1991-92) for third-most double-doubles in a single season in franchise history… Marvin Williams added 13 points and three of the Hornets starters finished in double-digit scoring… Four Charlotte reserves - Jeremy Lamb (12), Willy Hernangomez (12), Malik Monk (11) and Frank Kaminsky (10) - scored double digits off the bench as they outscored New York’s bench, 52-24… Monk’s 11 points came on 4-of-7 shooting, including 3-of-6 from deep. Monk has made three-or-more three-point field goals in two-straight games and four of his last six appearances. Including his 11 points tonight, Monk has scored at least 10 points in four of his last six games played… The Hornets finished with 17 second-chance points compared to the Knicks 13. Charlotte led New York in points in the paint, 70-58.
