Dancer Rookie Blog: The Fitness Behind the Dance Moves

by Brittany

Being physically fit is such an important aspect of being a Miami HEAT Dancer. Dancing for hours at a time during rehearsals helps us to stay fit, but we also go the extra mile during our team workouts with our amazing trainer Peter.

Our workout routines vary between partner workouts, weight lifting, and cardio and they normally take place at the end of rehearsals.  Peter definitely caters our workouts to target our specific needs as dancers. Because of these workouts we look amazing in uniform and we’re also able to better perform all of our duties both on and off the court.

We recently took an exercise class together as a team at The Epic Hotel. It consisted of HIIT training and a rotation of groups through different stations with different exercises. It was not only an amazing workout but a great team bonding experience for us as well.

Most people assume that at games we only perform; but we actually do so much more and we move nonstop. For example: we may have to dance with DJ Irie, run to the other side of the arena, perform a routine, and then immediately go do our 4th quarter ‘Jump Around’ - all with no break in between. If we don’t have our cardiovascular and muscular endurance these tasks would be difficult to complete efficiently during games.

We are more than just dancers. We are athletes.
