MALIK ALLEN

Assistant Coach

Malik Allen, who began his NBA career as an undrafted free agent with the HEAT back in 2001, begins his fifth season as an Assistant Coach on Head Coach Erik Spolestra’s staff. Allen, who served as the head coach of the HEAT’s 2021 and 2022 summer league teams, works primarily with the HEAT big men. Prior to returning to Miami beginning with the 2019-20 season, Allen spent one season (2018-19) as an Assistant Coach with the Minnesota Timberwolves and four years (2014-18) as Assistant Coach with the Detroit Pistons under Stan Van Gundy, who he played for in both Miami and Orlando.

A 10-year NBA veteran, Allen appeared in 478 games (125 starts) and averaged 4.9 points, 2.8 rebounds and 15.2 minutes while shooting 43.9 percent from the field and 77.8 percent from the foul line. Additionally, he made the postseason in six of his 10 seasons, including an appearance in the 2004 Eastern Conference Semifinals with Miami. Allen, who initially signed with the HEAT on July 20, 2001, played his first four seasons in Miami. He appeared in 151 games (81 starts) with the HEAT from 2001-05 and averaged 7.2 points, 4.2 rebounds and 22.1 minutes while shooting 42.6 percent from the field and 80.3 percent from the foul line. Allen enjoyed his finest NBA season, with the HEAT in 2002-03, when he set career highs in games played (80) and starts (73) and averaged career highs in points (9.6), rebounds (5.3) and minutes (29.0). After leaving Miami, he went on to play in Charlotte, Chicago, New Jersey, Dallas, Milwaukee, Denver and Orlando before retiring after the 2010-11 season. Prior to playing in the NBA with Miami, Allen began his professional career with the San Diego Wildfire of the ABA in 2000-01.

A graduate of Villanova University with a degree in Communications, Allen was a four-year letterwinner from 1996-2000. He appeared in 125 games for the Wildcats and averaged 9.1 points and 5.7 rebounds while shooting 51.4 percent from the floor. He earned All-Big East Second Team honors his senior year after leading the Wildcats in scoring (14.2 ppg), rebounding (7.4 rpg) and blocks (1.88 bpg) and in February of 2022 he was inducted into the Villanova Athletic Hall of Fame.

A Willingboro, NJ native, Allen and his wife, Kara, live in Palmetto Bay with their son, Dante, and their daughter, Maya.
