CARTERSVILLE, GA –- To generate excitement around youth basketball across the state of Georgia, the Atlanta Hawks Basketball Academy organized the Atlanta Hawks Youth Classic, the state’s largest-ever free-to-register youth basketball showcase, which occurred this past weekend at LakePoint Champions Center. At the three-day showcase, a total of 125fun and competitivebasketball games took place on 12 hardwood basketball courts at the state-of-the-art facility.

“The Atlanta Hawks Youth Classic was an incredible success,” said Hawks Vice President of Basketball Development Jon Babul. “As we strive to grow the game of basketball across Metro Atlanta and the state of Georgia, we are proud to have created a fun, safe, competitive and inclusive environment for athletes to enjoy a memorable experience.”

The showcase featured 80 teams who had their registration costs covered by local attorney Ken Nugent’s ‘Score for Scholarships’ program in partnership with the Atlanta Hawks Foundation.

“We were thrilled to host the Atlanta Hawks Youth Classic here at LakePoint,” said Dean Keener, senior vice president of business development at LakePoint Sports. “The Hawks planned a fantastic event that brought together players, coaches and their families from across Georgia for an exciting weekend of great basketball.”

Each team had the opportunity to compete in three games within their divisions, which were broken up relative to the participants’ age and ability. An “open” division consisted of teams from schools, religious-affiliated organizations, parks and recreation departments, community centers as well as developmental basketball programsand an “elite” division was denoted as a competitive division consisting of all-star teams, club teams and travel basketball teams. As part of the event, there was also an eight-team bracket comprised of athletes from Special Olympics Georgia, one of the newest partners of the Atlanta Hawks Foundation.

As a result of their team’s performance in this tournament, the winners of the 14U Girls Elite (Strong Center 2024) and 14U Boys Elite (Tri-City Elite) qualified for the Jr. NBA Global Championship Southeast Regional, which is set to take place at LakePoint Champions Center in June. At the Southeast Regional, they will compete for an opportunity to participate in the Jr. NBA Global Championships at Disney’s ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex in Orlando, Fla in August.

DECATUR, GA-– Earlier this morning, the Atlanta Hawks Basketball Academy closed out 2019 by hosting a Lady Ballers Holiday Clinic Powered by Georgia Power at Decatur High School. The Lady Ballers Program aims to support youth basketball participation and improve the overall youth basketball experience for girls. The focus of this clinic was for girls in attendance to sharpen basketball fundamentals and strengthen transferable life skills such as teamwork, leadership and self-confidence.

“We are thrilled to partner with Georgia Power for this special Lady Ballers Holiday Clinic,” Hawks’ Vice President of Basketball Development Jon Babul said. “As we constantly strive to create an experience for all athletes that they will remember for a lifetime, this clinic and the #PowerFoward panel gave young female athletes an opportunity to ring in the New Year learning, competing and having fun.”

During a special off-court session, there was a #PowerForward panel on how sport impacts life beyond the court. The panel featured positive female role models including Atlanta Dream Head Coach Nicki Collen, NASM Elite Trainer Sondi Carter and Pharlone Toussaint, the Atlanta Program Officer at the Laureus Sport for Good Foundation USA. ESPN Basketball Analyst and Former Tennessee Lady Volunteer Andraya Carter moderated this panel, which aimed to empower, challenge and inspire the girls in attendance to rise above the competition both on and off the court.

“It was great being a part of today’s Georgia Power #PowerForward Panel,” Collen said. “I hope that the young girls in attendance learned that if they are both coachable and put in an unmatched effort that they will be successful in what they set out to accomplish.”

Atlanta Hawks Impact More Than 90 Girls at the Lady Ballers Holiday Clinic Powered by Georgia Power

ATLANTA –- Today Atlanta Hawks Head Coach Lloyd Pierce announced a multi-year partnership, pledging a significant financial contribution to the Georgia Innocence Project (GIP), an independent nonprofit organization that works to correct and prevent wrongful convictions in Georgia. Along with the donation, the Atlanta Hawks retail team has created a GIP and Hawks co-branded apparel bundle that is now available in the Hawks Shop and online. The bundle is $35 and includes a t-shirt, hat, and wristband. The items will be offered in two different color variations, a traditional black and red edition and a Peachtree-themed edition. The latter will only be sold in the store on Peachtree Nights. The Hawks will donate 20 percent of the proceeds generated from the bundle to GIP.

“We chose GIP because of the passionate people we've encountered who are dedicating their time and professional expertise to help others who are wrongfully convicted and have limited resources to fight for themselves. That level of commitment and passion is important to the Pierce family,” said Atlanta Hawks Head Coach Lloyd Pierce. “The mission is to not only spread awareness to the work they are doing, but to also attract others who can provide resources and reform laws while growing the community of individuals who can help exonerate the wrongfully accused.”

Coach Pierce and the Hawks will also host GIP exonerees and their family members, along with GIP staff and volunteers at select Hawks games in the Coaches Corner throughout the season.

“At Georgia Innocence Project, we strive to be a voice for all the imprisoned innocent people in our state. Today, thanks to Coach Pierce and our new partnership with the Hawks, we will be adding a whole new chorus of voices to that fight,” said Georgia Innocence Project Executive Director Clare Gilbert. “We are profoundly grateful and excited for this partnership, and for the opportunity to raise even more awareness about the epidemic of wrongful convictions in Georgia.”

Georgia Innocence Project provides free legal representation to people in Georgia who have been convicted of serious crimes that they did not commit. GIP also works to prevent future wrongful convictions by raising awareness through education and by advocating for policy and legislative reform.

Atlanta Hawks Head Coach Lloyd Pierce Partners with GA Innocence Project to Prevent Wrongful Convictions

ATLANTA –- The Hawks-Naismith Holiday Classic, presented by Atlanta Hawks Basketball Club and The Atlanta Tipoff Club, administrators of the national Naismith Awards, will feature a total of 12 high school basketball games this Friday, Dec. 13 and Saturday, Dec. 14. Continuing the experimental trial at the Hawks-Naismith Tipoff Classic, which took place in November at the Inman Center at Pace Academy, the Georgia High School Association will allow for the use of a 30-second shot clock for 11 of 12 games during this year’s event.

“The Hawks-Naismith Holiday Classic is bringing the best teams and talent from Atlanta and the state of Georgia under one roof for a weekend of high-level high school basketball,” said ESPN National Recruiting Director for Basketball Paul Biancardi. “The implementation of the shot clock is forward-thinking and will engage all fans while growing the game. Head to Norcross High School this weekend to watch the some of the best, local and national matchups.”

Tickets for the Hawks-Naismith Holiday Classic on Friday, Dec. 13 and Saturday, Dec. 14 will be available starting at 3:30 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 13 at the doors of the Norcross High School gymnasium. Tickets are $10 for adults and $5 for students (with a valid ID). All youth under the age of six will be permitted to enter free of charge. Additionally, all students (K-12) and youth who attend will receive a free Atlanta Hawks t-shirt. A special, free Atlanta Hawks ticket voucher will be available to those in attendance while supplies last.

Each year, the Hawks-Naismith Classic partner with a different community organization to make a difference in the community. This year’s Classic has teamed up with the local Martin Luther King Jr. Recreation and Aquatic Center, home to the Hawks’ 23rd renovated community basketball court, to collect toys for youth who live in that community and visit the Center. Each team has been asked to bring new toys to donate. Parents, family members and fans are also encouraged to join the teams by bringing new toys with them to the games, as well.

The first day of the showcase will begin on Friday, Dec. 13 with matchups of girls teams from both Norcross and Buford (3:00 p.m.) and then, the boys teams from Buford and Wesleyan (5:30 p.m.). Later that evening, the girls teams from Lovejoy and Wesleyan (7:00 p.m.) will compete and Chattahoochee and Pebblebrook (8:30 p.m.) will wrap up the night.

During the morning of Saturday, Dec. 14, the Hawks in partnership with Ken Nugent will host a free Jr. Hawks Basketball Clinic for 100 boys and girls at Norcross High School in advance of the 16 teams that will square off for the second day of the Holiday Classic. The first of these eight games will be the girls teams from Brookwood and Maynard Jackson (10:00 a.m.) followed by the girls teams from North Cobb and Campbell (11:30 a.m.). After that, the boys matchups will start, first with Westside Macon versus Milton (1:00 p.m.) and Central Macon versus Lambert (2:30 p.m.). The afternoon/evening session will tip off with boys teams from Gainesville and Sandy Creek (4:15 p.m.), Discovery and Southwest DeKalb (5:45 p.m.) and Grayson and McEachern (7:15 p.m.). To conclude this year’s event, the host school Norcross will compete against Tucker (8:45 p.m.).
