Grizzlies fall to Warriors in Game 1

Warriors take series lead, 1-0

The Memphis Grizzlies fell to the Golden State Warriors on Sunday afternoon in the series opener of the Western Conference Semifinals, 86-101.

Marc Gasol had 21 points and nine rebounds, and Zach Randolph finished with 20 points and nine rebounds for a Memphis team missing point guard Mike Conley. He sat on the bench in a suit, his left eye still swollen, as he continues to recover from surgery to repair broken bones in his face.

The Warriors shot 50.6 percent, including 46.4 percent from 3-point range (13 of 28). The Grizzlies shot 45.2 percent but was just 3 of 12 (25 percent) from beyond the arc. Both teams had 16 turnovers.

Stephen Curry pushed the pace from start to finish, and Memphis never could slow Golden State down. The Warriors went ahead by 16 in the second quarter, and Curry kept the pressure after the Grizzlies moved within seven.

Golden State led by nine at the half, 20 late in the third quarter and never let Memphis come close in the fourth despite Draymond Green and center Andrew Bogut getting in foul trouble.

Stephen Curry had 22 points and seven assists. Klay Thompson added 18 points and Draymond Green scored 16.

The Grizzlies and Warriors will tip-off again on Tuesday at 9:30pm(CT). Catch Game 2 at the Official Watch Party.

Quotes

On the game
"Good game. I thought our defense was pretty good, although they were shooting a high percentage. They got too many easy baskets. I thought our offense really struggled tonight and put our defense in a bad way. You know, we missed, I think, eight lay‑ups throughout the course of the game. We had 16 turnovers. We've done a really good job of keeping our turnovers down in the last series, and you just can't keep giving those guys shots at you, and I thought that's what happened. The second half they got too many loose balls, offensive rebounds, second chances, kick‑outs and getting extra looks. Draymond came out and hit three of his first four threes, which was a good start for them, got them going, but we've just got to keep doing what we do and we've got to get a third scorer, especially from the perimeter to try to find a way to get Courtney Lee free to get some more looks."
-- Head Coach Dave Joerger

What does Mike Conley give you that you didn't have today?
"He's a real pick‑and‑roll threat, he's a threat in transition to go end to end. He also shoots a high percentage from three, especially as a catch‑and‑shoot guy. They had a lot of guys in the lane. They're very athletic, they are very long across at the wings, so it was very jammed up there for Marc. I think he had eight shot attempts coming down the stretch. He got a couple more, ended up with 10. He did a good job of getting to the foul line, but there's a lot of people in there. We're going to have to keep cutting, we're going to have to knock down some shots from the perimeter."
-- Head Coach Dave Joerger

What did you think you did well tonight that you can build on for Game 2?
"We did some things well. Of course we can do a lot of things a lot better, but I feel like we did some good things. We've just got to do it more, especially keeping the ball on the middle of the floor where the other team cannot double you. Once they start doubling you from the baseline, they came, they came from the top, they gave you different looks to see how you react to it. But at the end of the day, you've got to play your game. We can't turn the ball over against a team like that because they're going to make you pay. That's one thing you can't do. You can't turn it over. Of course they do a great job of running and making you pay in turnovers, and you've got to do a good job of not turning it over and playing defense with your offense, as well."
-- Marc Gasol
