Grizzlies assign James Ennis, Jarrell Martin and Russ Smith to Iowa Energy

The Memphis Grizzlies assigned forward James Ennis, forward Jarell Martin and guard Russ Smith to the team’s NBA Development League affiliate, the Iowa Energy, Grizzlies General Manager Chris Wallace announced today. This marks the fourth assignment to Iowa for Ennis and the first for Smith and Martin this season.

Ennis (6-7, 210) has averaged 23.3 points, 5.0 rebounds, 1.7 assists and 1.33 steals in 36.8 minutes in three games (all starts) in his first three assignments with the Energy. The 25-year-old scored 32 points in his NBA D-League debut on Dec. 5 at Canton. The 2013 Big Sky Player of the Year at California State University, Long Beach has totaled seven points, five rebounds, three assists, two steals and two blocks in 26 minutes through seven appearances this season with the Grizzlies and Miami Heat.

Martin (6-10, 239) was selected by Memphis with the 25th overall pick in the first round of the 2015 Draft following a two-year collegiate career at Louisiana State University. The 21-year-old earned consensus First Team All-Southeastern Conference honors as a sophomore, averaging 16.9 points, 9.2 rebounds and 1.8 assists in 35.1 minutes in 33 games (32 starts), ranking third in the SEC in scoring, rebounding and field goal percentage (.509). The Baton Rouge native underwent offseason surgery on his left foot and is still to make his NBA debut.

Smith (6-0, 165) averaged 19.3 points, 5.1 rebounds, 3.6 assists and 2.00 steals in 33.1 minutes in 18 games (12 starts) last season with Iowa. The 24-year-old owns career D-League averages of 18.1 points, 4.3 rebounds and 4.2 assists in 30.8 minutes in 25 games (12 starts) with the Energy and Fort Wayne Mad Ants. Now in his second NBA campaign, the University of Louisville product has recorded 1.8 points in 4.3 minutes in 13 games with the Grizzlies.
