Grizzlies re-assign James Ennis, Jarell Martin and Russ Smith to Iowa Energy
The Memphis Grizzlies re-assigned forward James Ennis, forward Jarell Martin and guard Russ Smith from the team’s NBA Development League affiliate, the Iowa Energy, Grizzlies General Manager Chris Wallace announced today. This marks the fifth assignment to Iowa this season for Ennis and the second for both Martin and Smith.
Ennis (6-7, 210) has averaged 23.3 points, 5.0 rebounds, 1.7 assists and 1.33 steals in 36.8 minutes in three games (all starts) in his first four assignments with the Energy. The 25-year-old scored 32 points in his NBA D-League debut on Dec. 5 at Canton. The 2013 Big Sky Player of the Year at California State University, Long Beach, Ennis has totaled 11 points, five rebounds, three assists in 34 minutes through eight appearances this season with the Grizzlies and Miami Heat.
Martin (6-10, 239) logged three minutes in his NBA debut on Dec. 18 at Dallas after missing the first 27 games of the season while recovering from left foot surgery. The 21-year-old was selected by Memphis with the 25th overall pick in the first round of the 2015 Draft following a two-year collegiate career at Louisiana State University, where he earned consensus First Team All-Southeastern Conference honors as a sophomore. The Energy did not play during Martin’s initial D-League assignment, a one-day stay on Dec. 17.
Smith (6-0, 165) posted 18.1 points, 4.3 rebounds and 4.2 assists in 30.8 minutes in 25 games (12 starts) with the Energy and Fort Wayne Mad Ants last season. Now in his second NBA season, the 24-year-old University of Louisville product has recorded 1.6 points in 4.1 minutes in 14 games with the Grizzlies. The Energy did not play during Smith’s first assignment this season, a one-day stint on Dec. 17.
