Grizzlies set to begin construction at FedExForum to enhance Basketball Facilities

The 2015 NBA Draft Week in Memphis has already proven to be a time of improvement and progress for the Memphis Grizzlies, and Draft Night has yet to commence.

During the June 23 meeting of the Public Building Authority (PBA) at FedExForum, the Grizzlies were unanimously – and enthusiastically – granted permission by the PBA’s board to begin construction on an initial phase of capital projects at FedExForum to enhance the team’s basketball facilities.

Under-utilized space in FedExForum will be transformed to: create a state-of-the-art video and screening room for the players and coaches to analyze game and practice footage, renovate the coaches’ offices and create office space for front-office personnel in FedExForum.

This upgrade represents another step towards creating the best-in-class basketball organization that owner Robert Pera envisions. It will ensure that our guys in uniform have cutting edge facilities and communication among our basketball operations staff is streamlined. At Robert’s direction, the Grizzlies are committed to both cultivating a working culture and investing in the requisite facilities needed to sustain success and encourage growth.

“You want to keep your talent, and part of that is investing in them for the long-haul, and committing to doing things the right way,” continued Wexler.

The PBA is the entity established by the city of Memphis and Shelby County, which oversaw construction of FedExForum and now holds the title to it. The Grizzlies were on Tuesday’s meeting agenda because as part of the PBA oversight of FedExForum, the board must approve capital expenditure projects that exceed $500,000. The costs of the basketball operations upgrades that were approved at the meeting are being funded by the Grizzlies.

The Grizzlies organization and Robert Pera’s personal commitment to maintain and enhance FedExForum for both fans and players is vital to the Public Building Authority and our community. By providing the funding for these improvements, Robert continues to exhibit his long-term commitment to professional basketball in Memphis.

With the recent approval, FedExForum will begin construction immediately and anticipate having this initial phase of construction complete before the team returns for Training Camp in September.
