Grizzlies Head Team Physician Dr. Frederick M. Azar of Campbell Clinic named President of American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons

MEMPHIS, March 11, 2014 - Dr. Frederick M. Azar was named President of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons (AAOS) at the organization’s recent annual meeting in New Orleans, the team announced today.

Dr. Azar has been the head team physician for the Memphis Grizzlies since the team came to the Bluff City in 2001. In the 13 years he has served as the team’s orthopaedic physician, Azar has successfully managed the rehabilitation of multiple player injuries. He has remained integral in every step of the rehab process, for both injuries requiring surgery and those calling for physical therapy. Azar remains the team’s point of contact for other NBA teams soliciting second opinions on injuries and facilitating visiting teams’ orthopedic needs.

“I am honored to partner with countless other colleagues around the country as we continue to advance the field of orthopaedics and work to make groundbreaking discoveries in musculoskeletal medicine and surgery,” Azar said. “Improving the health of our patients and preserving their access to our care are our top priorities. I look forward to the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead for our profession in the coming year.”

Over his yearlong term as president of the AAOS, Dr. Azar will oversee management of AAOS affairs, heading up the administrative body and directing activities and policies related to both the academy and its association. He previously served as first vice president of the AAOS board of directors last year.

In addition to his work with the Grizzlies and Campbell Clinic, Dr. Azar is a professor and director of the Sports Medicine Fellowship Program at the University of Tennessee-Campbell Clinic Department of Orthopaedic Surgery, where he previously served as research director. He also serves as the team physician for various amateur athletic programs in the Mid-South, including the University of Memphis and Christian Brothers University.
