Pre-Draft Analysis

Areas of Strength
Kyrie Irving is proving himself to be not just a precocious All-Star but the type of point guard who might start attracting free agents eager to play with him. Forward Tristan Thompson and guard Dion Waiters are solid and center Anderson Varejao has value either on the floor or in a trade. Going public with the goal of contending for a playoff spot is smart, too, because it is time.

Needs Work
Small forward is an obvious need, with Alonzo Gee best suited to a bench role. Irving needs reliable backup at point guard. And Varejao's injury history suggests that whatever team he's on needs depth there, even with Tyler Zeller on board.

Two Stats That Matter
14.9 -- Cleveland's second-chance points per game, a category in which they ranked fourth in the NBA. Driving that: Their 12.2 offensive rebounds nightly, the seventh-most in the league.

35 -- Games decided by six points or fewer, tied with Dallas for the most in the NBA last season.

The Way To Go
Four picks is over-the-top for a roster that already tilts young, so if GM Chris Grant can package one or more with a player to acquire more established help (regardless of position) he should do it. As for the top pick, a rumored swap for Portland's LaMarcus Aldridge would make sense but a similarly speculated-upon trade for Sacramento's DeMarcus Cousins would be inviting discontent. Better yet: Stay put, take Kentucky's Nerlens Noel and remain patient while he finishes off his knee rehab. John Calipari told the Cleveland Plain Dealer that Grant scouted more of Noel's games than anyone else.
