Lost in conference semifinals to Miami

Pre-Draft Analysis

Areas of Strength
The Bulls potentially have a starting lineup that can be the equal of any in the NBA, with current All-Stars Joakim Noah and Luol Deng joined on the front line by former All-Star Carlos Boozer, who had his best season of three in Chicago. Jimmy Butler, a deep reserve at this time last year, developed so quickly that he'll likely start at shooting guard. And Derrick Rose, finally, will be back (he will, won't he?).

Needs Work
That leaves the bench. Chicago started over in October from its solid crew of backups in 2010-11 and 2011-12 and actually got reasonable results. But Nate Robinson and Marco Belinelli might fetch bigger offers than Bulls management would pay. Center Nazr Mohammed, also free to sign elsewhere, showed value late in the season and the postseason. So depth is an issue, along with outside shooting.

Two Stats That Matter
.433 -- Chicago's winning percentage over the past three seasons (26-34) when scoring fewer than 90 points. Unimpressed? The rest of the league in that time was at .157.

188 -- Games missed due to injury/illness by various Bulls. Derrick Rose accounted for 82 of them. The injury trend continued in the playoffs with Luol Deng and Kirk Hinrich missing the East semifinals vs. Miami.

The Way To Go
This year's draft class allegedly offers depth at shooting guard, though anyone still on the board at No. 20 is unlikely to challenge Butler for the starting spot. Chicago's focus on new talent remains "stretch four" Nikola Mirotic, still developing with Real Madrid in European play, and the Charlotte first-round pick that might not be conveyed until 2016. So a backup big or perimeter shooting are the best bets at No. 20.
