Pre-Draft Analysis

Areas of Strength
Coaching and defense. But Doc Rivers, though it's doubtful he'll leave, has yet to commit to another season. And if Kevin Garnett doesn't return, the defense, which has been the league's best over the least six years, takes a big hit. So, with Rajon Rondo recovering from ACL surgery, not much is guaranteed in Boston.

Needs Work
Offense, especially in the paint. The Celtics have started two jump-shooting bigs -- Garnett and Brandon Bass -- for the last couple of years. Furthermore, Paul Pierce isn't able to create shots for himself and others like he could a few years ago. As a result, the Celtics have been a below-average offensive team for the last three seasons, even with a healthy Rondo.

Two Stats That Matter
8.5 -- The Celtics allowed 8.5 fewer points per 100 possessions with Kevin Garnett on the floor (96.2) than with him on the bench (104.6).

47.5 -- The Celtics ranked 30th in rebounding percentage, grabbing just 47.5 percent of available rebounds. They ranked 20th in defensive rebounding percentage (73.3 percent) and 30th in offensive rebounding percentage (20.1 percent).

The Way To Go
Whether or not he plans on having Kevin Garnett or Paul Pierce around next season, Danny Ainge needs to draft with the long-term future in mind. And the Celtics could use young talent at every position. So if they can trade any of their veterans for additional picks or young players, they have to pull the trigger. Moving away from the Big Three era and rebuilding will not be easy, but the Celtics need to move in that direction this summer. And that may require a step backward first.
