Orlando Magic Team Overview

2011-12 record: 37-29

Third place, Southeast Division

Lost in first round to Indiana

Round: 1

Round: 2

Areas of Strength:
Orlando is a 37-percent team from three-point land mainly because everything revolves around Dwight Howard and the defense he attracts. The Magic can be streaky from deep but for the most part, they take advantage of their clean looks and can put three decent shooters on the floor at all times.

Needs Work:
Orlando doesn't have a big scoring threat beyond Howard. There's no one who strikes fear into the other team. Ryan Anderson averaged 16 points but most came courtesy of open threes. Jason Richardson's scoring dropped to 11 per game. Orlando lacks a player who can create his own shot and break down a defense.

Two Stats That Matter:
5.7: Jameer Nelson caught lots of heat, both within and outside the organization, for his spotty play-making. He averaged less than six assists a game and it appears he's almost worn out his welcome in Orlando after holding down the starting point guard spot for six years.

13: Glen Davis started that many games, and only because Howard had back surgery. Orlando must decide whether Big Baby, who averaged 19 points and 9.2 rebounds in the playoffs, is capable of playing alongside Anderson and Howard.

The Way To Go:
Obviously, lots depends on what happens with Howard and if he's traded. The entire dynamic of the Magic can change if he's gone. Orlando would then have to re-tool a roster that was designed to compliment Howard. The Magic should look for a point guard from the draft, since Nelson can opt-out this summer. Marquis Teague, younger brother of Jeff, might work.
