Atlanta Hawks Team Overview

2011-12 record: 40-26

Second place, Southeast Division

Lost in first round to Boston

Round: 1

Round: 2

Analysis: Draft just the beginning for Hawks' new GM Danny Ferry

Areas of Strength:
The Hawks are rather solid in the backcourt, at least among the starters, with Joe Johnson and Jeff Teague making for a productive duo.

Needs Work:
The Hawks could use a scoring small forward to reduce the load from Johnson. Marvin Williams, a former No. 2 pick, hasn't fulfilled that role and might be better coming off the bench.

Two Stats That Matter:
18.8: Johnson's scoring average, which has dipped since he signed his massive contract. That average was matched last season by Smith, whose all-around skills suggest he's now the Hawks' best player.

6: That's how many players the Hawks have under contract for next season. They'll have to overhaul their entire bench, something that GM Rick Sund did very well last summer, adding Tracy McGrady and Ivan Johnson, who helped in generous doses.

The Way To Go:
Choosing late in the first round, the Hawks are likely out of the franchise player mix. But they should find a potential backup who can develop into a nice sixth man, or a forward replace Smith if he's traded in this, the final year of his contract. Or someone like Fab Melo, the Syracuse center who could move Horford to power forward.
