Dallas Mavericks Team Overview

2010-11 record: 57-25

Second place, Southwest Division

NBA Champions

Round: 1

Round: 2

Areas of strength:
Offense, offense, offense. The Mavs move the ball and shoot the ball as well as any team in the league. After 13 years in the NBA, rather than showing signs of age, Dirk Nowitzki actually seems to be getting better. Jason Terry, Jason Kidd and the supporting cast will find the open man and make you pay from the perimeter. Tyson Chandler finally gave them the defensive presence they needed in the middle.

Needs work:
Hard to go nit-picking at a team that accomplished so much this spring. But it would help to get somebody, anybody besides J.J. Barea who could drive the ball into the lane to score rather than spot up and shoot jumpers.

Two stats that matter:
-- Consecutive 50-win seasons, tied for the third-longest streak in league history.

28 -- Number of road wins, tied with Miami as the highest total in the league.

The way to go:
As long as Nowitzki is healthy and launching that virtually unstoppable step-back jumper, the Mavs will be in the Western Conference mix. They're expecting to get a boost when the injured Caron Butler and Roddy Beaubois get back onto the floor. With the 38-year-old Kidd pondering retirement, it's time they began looking for his replacement to run the offense on a full-time basis.
