Once again, the Clippers are going international, as the Clippers will face the San Antonio Spurs in Mexico City in a preseason game on Oct. 12 at the Palacios de los Deportes. It will be the first international contest for Los Angeles since 2006 when they traveled to Russia for two games against Russian opponents BC Khimki and CSKA Moscow. The Clippers previously played two preseason games in Mexico City in 1994, losing to Seattle 133-105 and Houston 111-103. In a conference call with NBA and international reporters on Thursday, Sept. 30, Clippers guard Eric Gordon spoke about the Clippers upcoming trip to Mexico City.

“It is going to be a really good opportunity for any NBA team to go over there to Mexico City and play in front of all those fans,” Gordon said. “We are sure that it is going to be a great environment.”

Gordon got his first taste of international competition this summer while winning a gold medal for the United States at the FIBA World Basketball Championships, and is looking forward to playing in front of more foreign fans.

“Playing in these international environments gives you a different focus.” Gordon said. “It brings you closer together with your teammates because it is a different style and the fans are really into it. Playing in those kind of conditions forces you to be even closer to your teammates and be even more focused.”

There is a new slogan painted on the far wall of the Clippers practice facility, high above the court in a prominent position, so every Clippers player has no choice but to catch a glimpse of it when he looks up after running wind sprints.

It reads: “Energy. Focus. No Excuses.”

New head coach Vinny Del Negro made sure that the words were applied before the start of training camp, and he is pushing his squad to make sure they take their meaning to heart every time they step on to the court or are in the locker room, where it also appears.

“We have talented players,” Del Negro said. “I just feel like we don’t need any excuses. I feel like with this group, having energy every day in your job is very important. With young players, what is important is keeping the confidence up and the energy up and having a focus on how you are going to do your job everyday and how you are going to improve. It is such a long season, there is so much adversity you have to deal with. But successful organization build a culture where there aren’t any excuses.”
