LA Clippers Acquire Kennard, Patton, Scrubb and Four Second-Round Picks In Three-Team Deal

The LA Clippers have completed a three-team trade with the Detroit Pistons and Brooklyn Nets, announced Lawrence Frank, Clippers President of Basketball Operations. The Clippers acquired Pistons guard Luke Kennard, Pistons center Justin Patton, the draft rights to Jayden Scrubb (Nets 55th overall pick in the 2020 NBA Draft) and four second-round draft picks (Portland 2023, Detroit 2024, 2025, 2026). The Nets received Clippers guard Landry Shamet, Pistons guard Bruce Brown and the draft rights to Reggie Perry (Clippers 57th overall pick in the 2020 NBA Draft). The Pistons acquired the draft rights to Saddiq Bey (Nets 19th overall pick in the 2020 NBA Draft), Clippers guard Rodney McGruder, Nets forward Dzanan Musa, a second-round draft pick (Toronto 2021), and the draft rights to Jaylen Hands.

“Luke is a young, ascending player who has worked hard to establish himself as a reliable shooter and playmaker,” said Frank. “We’ve admired him from afar for quite a while and are excited to have him. In addition, the draft assets allow us the opportunity to continue drafting and developing young talent, or otherwise explore trade opportunities, for years to come.”

Kennard, a 6-foot-5, 206-pound guard, was selected by the Pistons with the 12th overall pick in the 2017 NBA Draft. He appeared in 164 career NBA games and holds averages of 9.8 points, 2.8 rebounds, and 2.2 assists per game. Prior to the NBA, Kennard was a consensus Second Team All-American as a sophomore at Duke University. He was named the Most Valuable Player of the 2017 ACC Tournament and a John R. Wooden Award finalist.

Patton, 23, appeared in five games for the Oklahoma City Thunder last season, averaging 1.8 points and 1.0 rebounds. The 6-foot-11 center was selected by the Chicago Bulls with the 16th pick in the 2017 NBA Draft and has played in nine career NBA games with the Minnesota Timberwolves, Philadelphia 76ers and Thunder. A product of Creighton University, Patton was named the 2016-17 Big East Rookie of the Year and earned a spot on the 2016-17 All-Big East second team.

Scrubb averaged 21.9 points, 2.7 assists and 6.8 rebounds at John A. Logan College last season, where he was named the 2019-20 National Junior College Athletic Association Player of the Year. The 6-foot-6 guard shot 52.4 percent from the field throughout his collegiate career, earning a 2019-20 NABC All-America First Team selection as a sophomore and a 2018-19 NJCAA Division I All-America First Team selection as a freshman.

“Landry is a terrific player who made some big shots for the Clippers and will make a lot more in his NBA career,” said Frank. “Rodney is a true professional who elevated our team. We wish Landry the best of luck in Brooklyn, and Rodney in Detroit.”

Shamet, 23, appeared in 53 games for the Clippers this season, averaging 9.3 points, 1.9 assists and 1.9 rebounds. The 6-foot-4 guard was selected by the Philadelphia 76ers as the 26th pick in the 2018 NBA Draft, before being acquired by the Clippers ahead of the 2019 NBA Trade Deadline. A product of Wichita State University, he holds NBA averages of 9.2 points, 1.8 rebounds and 1.6 assists in 132 career appearances with the Sixers and Clippers.

McGruder, 29, appeared in 56 games this season, averaging 3.3 points and 2.7 rebounds. Before joining the Clippers, the 6-foot-4 guard played with the Miami Heat for three years (2016-19) and holds career averages of 5.9 points, 3.1 rebounds and 1.3 assists in 218 appearances over four NBA seasons. Prior to the Heat, McGruder played two seasons in the G League with the Maine Red Claws and the Sioux Falls Skyforce.
