LA Clippers To Open Preseason Against Australia’s Sydney Kings Hold Training Camp In Hawai’i Sept. 24-30
The L.A. Clippers and the Hawai’i Tourism Authority (HTA) today announced that the Clippers will play the Sydney Kings of Australia’s National Basketball League (NBL) to culminate the team’s second annual training camp trip to Hawai’i. The Clippers Hawai’i Classic will be played on September 30th at 3:30 p.m. HT at the Stan Sheriff Center in O’ahu on the campus of the University of Hawai’i in Honolulu. The Clippers will hold training camp starting September 24, also at the Stan Sheriff Center.
The Sydney Kings’ roster features multiple NBL MVPs and former NBA champion Andrew Bogut, who signed with the club this past April. The Kings have won three NBL Championships and appeared in five NBL Grand Finals. Their regular season also tips off in October.
Prime Ticket and FOX Sports San Diego will tip off their 2018-19 Clippers season schedule with live coverage of the Clippers vs. Kings game beginning with “Clippers Live” pre-game at 3:00 p.m. HT. “Clippers Live” post-game will air immediately following the game.
“We had a fantastic experience in Hawai’i last season thanks to our partners at the Hawai’i Tourism Authority and are thrilled to return again this fall as we continue our multi-year partnership,” said Gillian Zucker, President of Business Operations, L.A. Clippers. “A week in Hawai’i is the perfect way for the Clippers, our fans and our partners to start the season and it’s wonderful for the entire Clippers family to be able to make a difference in the local community while preparing for the season.”
“The Clippers remain one of the NBA’s hottest teams with a growing fan base in Hawai‘i and across the Pacific,” said George D. Szigeti, president and CEO of the Hawai‘i Tourism Authority. “They showed an outpouring of aloha to the people of Hawai‘i last year during their time on O‘ahu and HTA is proud to continue its marketing partnership with the Clippers this year. The Hawaiian Islands are a favorite destination for travelers from Southern California and Australia, so this matchup against the Sydney Kings gives us an opportunity to expand our reach to potential travelers in two of our key source markets.”
The Clippers held their first-ever training camp in Hawai’i last preseason and while there, the team opened a computer lab at R.L. Stevenson Middle School in Honolulu and held a Fan Fest that included autograph sessions, local food and activities. This year, the Clippers plan to visit and make a technology-based donation to a local school and hold a special event teaching young fans the fundamentals of basketball.
The Clippers’ comprehensive marketing partnership with HTA began in December of 2016. The relationship combines the Clippers preseason experience with regular season activations that include broadcast and online exposure, in-game promotions and the popular annual Clippers Hawai’i Night to drive awareness and travel to the Hawaiian islands.
