Briana Valdez, founder of HomeState, moved to Los Angeles from Austin, Texas after college. Almost immediately, she noticed the absence of her former state’s breakfast tacos, queso and Texas style hospitality After years of missing those things, she thought she might be the person to share them with Los Angeles.

She spent years writing a business plan, working on menu, and development, and finding a way to fundraise enough money to open a restaurant. During that time, she worked as host for four years at Thomas Keller’s Bouchon in Beverly Hills which she refers to as Restaurant University, learning the most she could through the experience. She is not a chef and prior to HomeState, had never run a business. By her own account, she “carved her way into the restaurant business”, driven to share her story of Texas and bring high quality food and hospitality to Los Angeles neighborhoods. Briana was recently named one of the 2021 Top 50 Leaders in Hospitality by Nation’s Restaurant News and is excited to share her experience to support and encourage fellow entrepreneurs and dreamers.

HomeState opened its doors in 2013 in the East Hollywood neighborhood of Los Angeles. The flour tortilla was front and center, inspired by her Grandma Lala and made daily by HomeState’s tortillas Queens. In 2020, HomeState’s flour tortillas were named the “Best Flour Tortillas in Southern California” in KCRW’s & Gustavo Arellano’s Tortilla Tournament in 2020.

An essential ingredient at HomeState-the flour tortillas.

HomeState seeks to nurture community inside and outside the walls of their soon-to-be-five locations.

In 2015, they launched the Band Taco Program, to bring together music and tacos in support of neighboring communities. Each taco is developed alongside the artist, original artwork is commissioned by a local graphic artist and proceeds are donated to local charities; that have included Silverlake Conservatory of Music, ACLU SoCal, People Assisting the Homeless and most recently, No Us Without You!, Watts Empowerment Center and the Downtown Women’s Center.

Band Taco Alumni include Spoon, Questlove, Fitz & The Tantrums, Best Coast, Warpaint, Silversun Pickups, Flea, Cherry Glazerr, Grouplove, Sylvan Esso, Cold War Kids, Fred Armisen, Lord Huron, Norah Jones, Tijuana Panthers, Future Islands, Khruangbin and Midnight Hour.

Briana and the HomeState team are an example of what can be accomplished with a determined spirit and relentless optimism. Their team is transforming the LA culinary landscape and building lasting change in our community. HomeState is currently open in East Hollywood, Highland Park, and will be opening in Pasadena and West Adams this spring. HomeState likes to think of their restaurants as a “home away from home.” A place where everyone feels welcome and valued, no matter where you’re from.
