Kevin Cha is our AV/IT Engineer and has been with the team for 4 years! Kevin immigrated from South Korea in 2001, graduated from UC Irvine, and always dreamed of working in sports. He started with the team as Game Night Staff in a variety of different departments and eventually worked his way up to the IT department.

He is currently with the team in Orlando, so we were excited he had some free time to answer a few questions about life on the NBA’s campus!

What are some of your duties on game day?

During pre-game, we will come in early to do these following tasks: Make sure the coaches’ challenge and replay systems are working, check all the time clocks, check all the internet connections for the benches and locker rooms, and make sure that the bolts and nuts that hold the shot clock above the basket are tight.

During the game: We will be on a headset and standby if anyone calls us and ask for help.

After the game: Clean up all the internet lines to prep for the next day, turn off each basket, sanitize and clean all the equipment on the scorer’s table, and clean up ethernet cables inside of the locker rooms.

How has it been adapting to life in the bubble?

The NBA notified me of my schedule beforehand, so I was well-prepared before I left for Orlando. I knew I would have to be self-quarantined for a week, so I brought an Apple TV and gaming console to entertain myself while I was stuck in my room. I played NBA2K to make sure I prepared and hyped myself up for the NBA restart. I’ve also been working out since COVID-19 happened, so I would work out for an hour or two inside of my room to make sure I stayed in shape. After I finished self-quarantining, my work schedule consisted of 13+ hour days, so time flew by as we prepped for the restart of the season. My favorite thing about the bubble is being able to watch tons of basketball in live action. My least favorite thing is there are limited things you can do on off days. Since you cannot leave the bubble, the activities are limited to riding a bike, going to the arcade, or fishing. I also miss my family and my mom’s food.

How did it feel getting tested for COVID-19 the first time? Are you used to it by now?

When I got to Orlando, the first thing the NBA asked us to do was get tested for COVID-19. It was not the brain picking swab like people say, but believe me, it was not a pleasant feeling either. From there, I had to get tested every single day. I have to do this until I leave the bubble so I’ve made it part of my daily routine. Before I go to the arena for work, I will go to the testing room and get tested. I feel like my nose is getting a little bigger, but beside that, I’m really used to it now.

What does it feel like to be part of such a historic season?

I feel honored, I feel appreciated, and I feel grateful to be here. I want to say thank you to the NBA IT team who gave me this opportunity and a special thanks to our Clippers IT department who supported me to be here. Words cannot explain how I feel about being here because a limited number of people were selected to help with this historic season. Again, I want to say thank you to Clippers organization and Clippers IT department because without them, I would not be here.

This is the toughest question. I would have to say the Angus cheeseburger with tater tots was great. You cannot go wrong with tater tots.

As part of the trade, L.A. will send to New York forward Maurice Harkless, a 2020 first round pick, a protected 2021 first round swap option, and Detroit’s 2021 second round pick. The Clippers will send guard Jerome Robinson to Washington.

“Marcus is a player we’ve admired for a long time,” said Frank. “He is an established scorer, elite shooter, and imposing defender. We are excited to add his experience and toughness to our team.”

Added Frank, “Moe is a true professional who played a key role for our team this season. We wish him the best in New York. Jerome is a talented young player and we will be rooting for him as he continues his career in Washington.”

Morris Sr., 30, appeared in 43 games this season and is averaging career-highs in points (19.6), three-pointers made (2.7) and three-point field goal percentage (43.9). In his ninth NBA season he is also averaging 5.4 rebounds and 1.4 assists in 32.3 minutes. The Philadelphia native holds career averages of 12.1 points, 4.7 rebounds and 1.5 assists in 26.9 minutes across 588 appearances with the Houston Rockets, Phoenix Suns, Detroit Pistons, Boston Celtics and New York Knicks. The 6’8”, 218-pound forward played three collegiate seasons at the University of Kansas, where he was named Big 12 Player of the Year as a Junior in 2011, before being selected with the 14th overall pick in the 2011 NBA Draft by the Houston Rockets.

Harkless, 26, appeared in 50 games for the Clippers this season, averaging 5.5 points and 4.0 rebounds in 22.8 minutes. He holds career averages of 7.2 points and 3.7 rebounds in 23.0 minutes with the Orlando Magic, Portland Trail Blazers and Clippers. Harkless played one collegiate season at St. John’s University, where he was named Big East Rookie of the Year in 2012 and averaged 15.5 points and 8.6 rebounds in 36.1 minutes.

Thomas, 30, appeared in 40 games for the Wizards this season, averaging 12.2 points and 3.7 assists in 23.1 minutes. The Tacoma native holds career averages of 18.1 points and 5.0 assists in 28.9 minutes over 525 games with NBA seven teams. The 5’9”, 185-pound guard played three collegiate seasons at the University of Washington, where he was named to the 2010-11 All-Pac 12 first team before being drafted by the Kings with the 60th overall pick in the 2011 NBA Draft.

Robinson, 22, was selected by L.A. with the 13th pick in the 2018 Draft and has appeared in 75 games for the team. In his two seasons with the Clippers, he has averaged 3.1 points and 1.3 rebounds in 10.6 minutes. A three-year player at Boston College, Robinson earned First Team All-ACC honors as a junior in 2018.
