WRKO becomes new flagship radio station for Boston Celtics
BOSTON, MA (June 23, 2005) – The Boston Celtics and Entercom Boston announced today that they have reached agreement for WRKO 680 am to become the flagship radio station of the Boston Celtics. The deal is a multi-year agreement which includes promotional and programming support from Entercom’s sister station Sports Radio 850 WEEI.
WRKO and the Boston Celtics have a long history as the games were broadcast from 1981–1987 on WRKO during the Celtics Championship banner seasons. “This is a welcome homecoming of one of the great American heritage sports franchises to one of the great American heritage radio stations. We’re extremely excited to welcome the Boston Celtics back home to WRKO radio” said Program Director Mike Elder. The Celtics and WRKO reunited again during the 1995-1996 season.
“Celtics basketball is on the upswing, coming off an exciting season and a division title. We are very excited to return WRKO, where we’ve achieved some of our greatest success, to provide Celtics fans with an equally exciting radio broadcast experience” stated Rich Gotham, Executive Vice President for the Boston Celtics. “By partnering with WRKO and WEEI, we will dramatically increase our radio reach and create a valuable platform for cultivating an even stronger relationship with our loyal fan base”.
Sports Radio 850 WEEI will add to the partnership with weekly features including interviews with the Coaches, General Manager and players. “The Boston Celtics represent the very best of the NBA and I’m extremely excited to have them back in the Entercom family. WRKO will provide a tremendous platform for the broadcasts, and with the promotional power of WEEI, give the Celtics a fantastic two for one combination on the radio” said Director of Programming and Operations Jason Wolfe.
