CLEVELAND – The Cleveland Cavaliers announced today that Jordi Fernandez has been named the new head coach of their exclusively owned and operated NBA Development League affiliate, the Canton Charge.

"Jordi is a natural fit to lead the Charge after being a tremendous asset to our staff last year and playing a critical role cultivating talent with the Cavaliers for four seasons,” said Cavaliers Director of Development League Operations, Mike Gansey.  “His background with the Spanish National Team combined with his high-level domestic experience also gives him a unique basketball perspective that will greatly benefit our team.”

Fernandez, 31, spent last season as an assistant coach with the Charge on Steve Hetzel’s staff. Before joining the Charge, he served as a player development coach for the Cleveland Cavaliers from 2009-13.  In both prior roles, Fernandez’s responsibilities included conducting individual skill workouts with players, assisting with practice and game preparation, and forming international scouting reports.

“The Cavaliers and Charge are the model relationship for NBA D-League as far as the right balance between developing individual talent and attaining collective team success, and I am very thankful that they have given me this opportunity,” said Fernandez. “Canton has been like a second home to me since I arrived last year and I cannot wait to get started with a team that Charge fans can be proud to get behind.”

Alongside his roles with the Charge and Cavaliers, Fernandez serves as an assistant coach with the Spanish National Team’s U19 squad at the World Championships.  Prior to joining the Cavaliers, he served as a player development coach at IMPACT Basketball Academy, working with professional players on both the NBA and international level.  A native of Badalona, Spain, Fernandez attended Inefc Lleida in Spain, where he earned his degree in sport sciences.

Jordi Fernandez Named Head Coach of the Canton Charge

Week-in-Review:  Starting this weekend, the Charge tip off a five-game homestand.  But the team that takes the floor will be different than the one that did just two weeks ago – thanks in-part to a pair of NBA assignments.

The first assignment originally took place back on February 22, when the Cavaliers called up Charge big man and D-League All-Star, Arinze Onuaku, who had averaged 14.4 points and 9.7 boards in 27 games with Canton this season. On March 4, the Wine and Gold inked Arinze to his second 10-day deal.

On March 6, the Charge saw their versatile point guard, Jorge Gutierrez, sign a 10-day contract with the Brooklyn Nets – who he played with in Training Camp this past fall, averaging 1.8 points and 3.0 rebounds in five preseason contests before being waived on Oct. 26

The do-it-all Gutierrez averaged 13.9 points, 5.7 boards, 6.9 assists and 1.2 steals for the Charge this season. The former Pac-12 Player of the Year will be coached by fellow former Cal Golden Bear, Nets head coach Jason Kidd.

Also this week, the Cavaliers once again assigned swingman, Sergey Karasev, to the Charge. The Russian rookie has appeared in 12 games with Canton this season and has averaged 13.1 points, 4.3 rebounds, 2.4 assists and 1.2 steals in 30.0 minutes per contest.

On the floor, the Charge split a pair last weekend – topping Maine on Friday night before falling to Springfield on Sunday.

On Friday night, Kevin Jones notched his ninth double-double of the season, tying his season-high with 26 points to go with 11 boards (one night after going for 26 and 15 against Maine). The Charge improved to 17-3 on the season when holding an opponent under 100 points, forcing 25 turnovers en route to the 109-91 win. Jorge Gutierrez also doubled-up in the win with 14 points and 13 helpers.

On Sunday at the MassMutual Center, the Charge wrapped up their three-game trip with a 110-97 loss to the Springfield Armor.

After a back-and-forth first half, Canton fell behind in the third quarter. Steve Hetzel’s squad got to within a point, 89-88, with 7:37 to play, but Springfield outscored the Charge 21-9 the rest of the way to hand Canton its 15th loss of the season.

Kevin Jones posted his fifth straight double-double with 24 points and 17 boards. Shane Edwards added 24 points and seven rebounds and Jorge Gutierrez pitched with 13 points, nine assists and eight boards.

Even with the loss, the Charge (23-15) hold a 4-2 edge over Springfield in the season series – with a home meeting for each squad remaining on the schedule.

Did You Know:  With his call-up to the Nets, 25-year-old Jorge Gutierrez – a native of Chihuahua, Mexico – will become just the fourth player from Mexico to reach the NBA.

They Said It:  “We couldn't be prouder of Arinze and Jorge getting called up. It's the reason these guys are here: to get better individually and to progress their careers. Seeing guys like that get called up also affirms the work our team has been putting in all year long.  We have capable guys here in Canton who will embrace the change, will adjust and continue to play at the high level.”

Stat of the Week:  In his last five games – all double-doubles – Kevin Jones is averaging 24.4 points and 13.6 boards per contest.

Look Ahead:  The Charge (23-15) open their five-game homestand this weekend, beginning on Saturday afternoon when they take on Springfield at 1 p.m. at the Memorial Civic Center.

The Charge enter the weekend in second-place in the East Division, 1.5 games behind the Fort Wayne Mad Ants. Springfield currently sits fourth in the East, seven full games behind Canton. The Charge have one more meeting with Springfield this season after Saturday’s game (March 21).

After taking on Springfield, the Charge welcome Sioux Falls to Canton for a pair – on Sunday afternoon at 3 p.m. and Tuesday night at 7 p.m. The Skyforce is led by Trey Kelley (19 ppg), Larry Drew II (10 ppg, 6.5 apg) and Anthony Mason Jr., who dropped 27 points on Erie earlier this week.

Next weekend, the Charge host Manny Harris and the L.A. Defenders for a back-to-back on Friday and Saturday night, and we’ll preview the final two games of the homestand in next week’s Under the Boards.

CLEVELAND – The Cleveland Cavaliers have assigned guard/forward Sergey Karasev to the Canton Charge, the Cavaliers exclusively owned and operated NBA Development League team, Cavaliers acting General Manager David Griffin announced today from Cleveland Clinic Courts.

Karasev has appeared in 12 games for the Charge with averages of 13.1 points, 4.3 rebounds, 2.4 assists and 1.2 steals in 30.0 minutes per game.

Karasev will be available for Saturday’s Charge game against the Springfield Armor at the Canton Memorial Civic Center at 1:00 p.m.

CLEVELAND – The Cleveland Cavaliers have signed forward/center Arinze Onuaku from the Canton Charge, the Cavaliers exclusively owned and operated NBA Development League team, to a second 10-day contract, Cavaliers acting General Manager David Griffin announced today from Cleveland Clinic Courts.

Onuaku has appeared in 27 games for the Charge this season with averages of 14.4 points, 9.7 rebounds and 1.0 block in 24.2 minutes per game. He will be available for tonight’s Cavs game against the San Antonio Spurs at Quicken Loans Arena.

Cavs Sign Arinze Onuaku to Second 10-Day Contract

Week-in-Review:  The Charge had another busy week – again, both on the court and off.

Last Friday night, the Charge got double-doubles from their All-Star duo of Kevin Jones (23 points, 13 boards) and Arinze Onuaku (15, 16) and closed the season series at 7-1 against the Erie BayHawks – topping them, 104-82, at the Canton Civic Center.

Canton led by as many as 24 points and led for the final 31 minutes of the game, holding the East Division rivals to just 39 percent shooting from the field.

The following day, one of those All-Stars – Arinze Onuaku – was called up to Canton’s parent club, the Cavaliers, where he inked a 10-day contract. At the time of his call-up, the former Syracuse standout was averaging 14.4 points and 9.7 rebounds – including 11 double-doubles – in 26 contests with the Charge. He also appeared in three NBA games earlier this year with the New Orleans Pelicans.

Onuaku practiced with the Cavaliers that day, but was back in central Stark County later that night, as the Charge took on the Texas legends. The drive apparently didn’t tire him out as Arinze went on to tally his 12th double-double of the year with 13 points and 10 boards. Kevin Jones, again, also doubled-up with 22 points and 12 boards as the Charge blew past the Legends – sweeping the season series, 2-0, leading the entire game and by as many as 21 in the 118-106 victory.

On Thursday afternoon, Canton made another roster move, acquiring guard Brandon Paul from the available player pool.

The 22-year-old Paul recently played with Nizkny Novgorod of the Russian Pro Basketball League.  He also went to Summer League with the Minnesota Timberwolves after a solid four-year career at the University of Illinois, where he was third-team All-Big Ten and third in the conference in scoring as a senior.

On Thursday night, the Charge (22-14) traveled to Maine, where they fell to the Red Claws, 110-105, at the Portland Expo Building.

The Red Claws led by a point at intermission, but Kevin Jones took over in the third, notching a dozen points on a perfect 5-for-5 shooting from the floor, and the Canton led by six heading into the final period.

Canton continued to lead through the fourth, but a four-point play by Maine’s Frank Gaines tied the game at 103-103 and a Chris Babb trey gave the Red Claws a lead they would not relinquish.

Kevin Jones finished with his third straight double-double, leading the Charge with 26 points and 15 boards. Jorge Gutierrez added 10 points, nine boards and eight assists and Aleksander Czyz pitched in with 23 points and six rebounds.

Did You Know:  Newly-acquired Charge guard Will Cherry is Montana’s all-time steals leader and, with his 265 thefts, is second all-time in Big Sky Conference history.

They Said It:  “We’ve said it since the beginning: To be a no-excuse team, you have to wear it on your chest every single time you step out on the floor. So, regardless of what you’re feeling, you have to put everything that you have in the tank out there for each other. When you’re playing with the belief in your teammates and yourself, that positive energy kind of carries you through.”

Stat of the Week:  The Charge are 16-3 this season when holding opponents under 100 points.

Look Ahead:  Canton is in the midst of a short-but-tough road stretch this weekend – playing three games in four days away from the Memorial Civic Center. They’ll get another shot at Maine tonight and travel to Springfield to take on the Armor on Sunday afternoon at 3 p.m.

The Charge come into the weekend still atop the East Division, one game ahead of Fort Wayne and 7.5 games ahead of the Red Claws (14-20) – who they’ll face for the third time this season on Friday.

In two games against Maine, Shane Edwards averaging 18.5 points and 7.5 boards. For the Red Claws, Frank Gaines has averaged exactly 20 points on 56 percent shooting in two games against Canton.

After Friday, the two squads face each other just once more – a March 26th meeting in Canton.

Springfield, led by the second-ranked prospect in the D-Leauge – Darius Johnson Odom – comes into the weekend in 4th place in the East Division, 8.5 games behind the Charge. Springfield also recently acquired the D-League’s No. 4 prospect – and Kevin Jones’ former West Virginia teammate – Devin Ebanks, who suited up for the “Prospects” squad at the D-League All-Stat Game in New Orleans.

Canton leads the series with Springfield, 4-1, with three more matchups to go this season.
