Cleveland Cavaliers visit owner Dan Gilbert at his home on Saturday, sources say

DETROIT -- The Cleveland Cavaliers bypassed a full practice Saturday afternoon, choosing instead to visit owner Dan Gilbert at his home about 20 miles outside Detroit, sources tell cleveland.com.

Gilbert, who has been the Cavaliers’ chairman since 2005, continues to recover from a stroke suffered on May 26.

The Cavs played the Detroit Pistons in their second preseason game Friday night. Typically, the team will travel to its next destination -- in this case Boston -- immediately after the game. The Cavs play the Celtics Sunday afternoon at 3 p.m. But instead of flying into Boston late Friday, the team stayed overnight in Detroit, getting one extra day in the city so they could check in on Gilbert.

In a sign of unity and support, the Cavs brought the whole team to Gilbert’s home in Franklin, Michigan. According to sources, they even broke down film and conducted a brief walkthrough in preparation for Sunday’s matchup against the Celtics since Gilbert has a full basketball court -- a replica of the Cavs’ title court -- on his property. The visit also included lunch -- catered by Star Deli, a longtime staple of the Metro Detroit community for over 40 years -- between the team and its owner.

Cleveland Cavaliers Scribbles: Rising Collin Sexton, challenge for John Beilein
Author: Terry Pluto
Publication: Cleveland.com

CLEVELAND, Ohio – Scribbles in my Cleveland Cavaliers notebook as the season is only two weeks away:

1. Collin Sexton is on his way to becoming an elite scorer in his second pro season. Lost in the understandably rocky start to his rookie season in 2018-19 was his fast finish. After the All-Star break, Sexton averaged 21 points while shooting 48 percent (.413 on 3-pointers).

2. John Beilein should be the ideal coach for Sexton. Beilein isn’t hung up on the traditional backcourt roles of point guard and shooting guard. He wants good guards, period. Sexton (6-foot-2) was criticized for being more of a shooting guard last season.

3. Scoring is Sexton’s biggest asset. He has also added some strength and muscle tone to his 20-year-old frame. He looks stronger going to the rim. He was 9-of-10 from the free throw line in Friday’s loss in Detroit. He has scored 32 points in 45 preseason minutes.
