CLEVELAND, Aug. 24 – The Cleveland Cavaliers have promoted Mike Bratz to director of basketball operations and added Mark Warkentien as the director of player personnel, Cavaliers President and General Manager of Basketball Operations Jim Paxson announced today. Per team policy, specific contract terms were not disclosed.
"These moves allow us to expand the talent evaluation components of our basketball staff, not only within the NBA, but in college, Europe and all other places outside the NBA,” said Paxson.
In 2000-01, Bratz joined the Cavaliers as a college and minor-league scout. Most recently he was director of player personnel. Bratz has 24 years of NBA experience, including a nine-year NBA playing career, which included one season with the Cavaliers.
"Mike has done an excellent job for us and he is a great fit for his new role of director of basketball operations. He can now focus more exclusively on current NBA player evaluation and scouting,” said Paxson. Bratz will now oversee all pro player evaluation, team scouting, summer league and training camp operations for the Cavaliers.
Warkentien joins the Cavaliers after spending 10 seasons with the Portland Trailblazers where he has served in several capacities, including director of player personnel, assistant general manager and director of scouting.
“Mark is a great addition to our staff. He's a proven talent evaluator and has many years of experience that will benefit us,” said Paxson. Warkentien will focus on the team's college scouting and amateur player evaluation operation, as well as manage the operational aspects of the NBA Draft.
