Education is one of the pillars of the Cleveland Cavaliers’ community efforts and as part of that, the organization recognizes exemplary teachers and students throughout Northeast Ohio. Each month during the regular season, the Cavs select one teacher and one student to receive the team’s Head of the Class and All-Star Kids awards, respectively.

Head of the Class recognizes teachers in Northeast Ohio that make a difference in their students’ lives both inside and outside of the classroom. October’s winner was Mr. Dan Boyle, a sixth grade math teacher at Lee Eaton Elementary School in Northfield. Mr. Boyle is known to put smiles on his students’ faces while helping them make huge gains in math, as evident in their STAR math scores. He also frequently gives up his planning periods to interact with his students. Mr. Boyle has two special needs children and created the Team Boyle Foundation to promote awareness and provide fundraising for causes that impact the special needs community.

Mr. Boyle and his class enjoyed a visit from Cavs in-arena host Ahmaad and mascot Sir C.C., who presented him with a $500.00 donation to use for his classroom. Mr. Boyle also received tickets and club passes for complimentary food and beverage to the October 30th Cavs game, where he was honored at center court.

All-Star Kids recognizes students who set a positive example for their peers. October’s winner was Mariona Grier-Taylor, a fifth grader at Mayfair Elementary School in East Cleveland. Mariona is an active learner who participates in class and works hard with the goal of making the Honor Roll. She shows responsibility through her maintenance of her classroom’s Google Chromebooks. Mariona is also a member of the anti-bullying club and volunteers in the school cafeteria.

Ahmaad and Sir C.C. surprised Mariona at school to present her with tickets and club passes for complimentary food and beverage to the October 21st Cavs game, where she was honored at center court. She will also receive a pizza party for her class at a later date.
