Education is one of the pillars of the Cleveland Cavaliers’ community efforts and as part of that, the organization recognizes exemplary teachers and students throughout Northeast Ohio. Each month during the regular season, the Cavs select one teacher and one student to receive the team’s Head of the Class and All-Star Kids awards, respectively.

Head of the Class recognizes teachers in Northeast Ohio that make a difference in their students’ lives both inside and outside of the classroom. March’s winner was Matthew Butler, a seventh and eighth grade math teacher at Innes Community Learning Center in Akron, where he is known for being positive, approachable and welcoming to students of all grades. He began the school’s Drama Club in order to introduce students to the arts and to provide a safe environment after school. Mr. Butler also organizes the school’s talent show.

Mr. Butler enjoyed a school visit from Cavs in-arena host Ahmaad and mascot Sir C.C, who presented him with a $500.00 donation to use towards his classroom. Mr. Butler also received tickets and club passes for complimentary food and beverage to the March 18th Cavs game, where he was honored at center court.

All-Star Kids recognizes students who set a positive example for their peers. March’s winner was Shayona Dawson-Wimberly, a fourth grader at Willow Elementary School in Cleveland, where she is always eager to learn, always smiling and always has a positive attitude. She has received Honor Roll, citizenship awards and attendance awards, as well as had the lead role in the school’s production of Cinderella. Shayona cares about others, as evidenced by her helping at monthly class service trips to University Settlement to sort produce for grocery pick-ups.

Ahmaad and Moondog surprised Shayona at school to present her with tickets and club passes for complimentary food and beverage to the March 22nd Cavs game, where she was honored at center court. She will also receive a pizza party for her class at a later date.
