Education is one of the pillars of the Cleveland Cavaliers’ community efforts and as part of that, the organization recognizes exemplary teachers and students throughout Northeast Ohio. Each month during the season, the Cavs will select one teacher and one student to receive the team’s Head of the Class and All-Star Kids awards, respectively. All-Star Kids is presented by the University of Akron, Ohio’s Polytechnic University.

Head of the Class recognizes teachers in Northeast Ohio that make a difference in their students’ lives both inside and outside of the classroom. The winner for January was Mary Figueroa, a math teacher at Imagine Bella Academy of Excellence. She is an exemplary teacher with a humble and selfless attitude. Ms. Figueroa has created a culture of high academic achievement and has one of the highest math learning gains for her students. She also holds an after-school tutoring group and is the lead decision-maker for the Character Development Task Force.

Ms. Figueroa and Imagine Bella Academy of Excellence enjoyed a visit from Cavs in-arena host Ahmaad and the team’s mascot, Sir C.C., who presented her with a $500.00 donation to use for her classroom. Ms. Figueroa also received tickets to the January 27th game against Phoenix, where she was honored on-court.

All-Star Kids, presented by the University of Akron, Ohio’s Polytechnic University, recognizes students who set a positive example for their peers. January’s winner was Kowaine Baker, a student at Shaw High School, where he comes to school every day on time and ready to learn. He demonstrates a positive attitude and has a strong work ethic and is always happy to assist his teachers and peers in the classroom. Kowaine is looking forward to attending Shaw’s Automotive Technology Career School.

Ahmaad and Sir C.C. surprised Kowaine and his class to present him with tickets to the January 30th game against San Antonio. He will also receive a pizza party for his class. Kowaine was honored at center court before the start of the game against the Spurs.
